I have a 1990 F150 that I just purchased from the original owner. The owner was probably in his late 70's and has left the truck sit for the last couple of years. The fuel has been removed from the front tank and replaced with about 4 gallons of new fuel. The truck will start briefly before shutting down immediately like it loses fuel. The front fuel pump I can hear turn on and also the rear tank I can hear the pump turn on. I did replace the ignition control module. I am wondering if the vehicle would start up at all if the fuel relay or tank switch were bad? OR any other suggests that I could try would be very much appreciated. Oh, sorry if I am using the quick reply but I did not see how to put up a post, new to the site. Thanks!
When I select the front tank, I do not hear the pump (as I do the rear when it is selected) and the truck will die if if leave it on the front tank for too long. The fuel gauge immediately goes to "E" or farther when selected as well. There is fuel in the tank and it occasionally "vents" gas out the neck/cap and on to the ground (this is not important but still puzzles me because the tank is not completely full). ANYWAY... with the pump and gauge not working, does that mean it is a switch issue or is it wired in a way that the pump being bad could/would cause overflowsthe gauge not to work? Thanks for any input...
the from pump has a bad valve. So when you drive your rear pump is pumping fuel into your front tank to point it overflows. Replace the front pump and all will be well. E except maybe the fuel gauge problem that's electrical. Probly just a bad sending unit
The fuel selector definitely does fail. I've an 89 and in the 500,000 miles I have on this brute, 2 have burned out. Full fuel pump current runs thru the selector, the switch is not relayed. All the other comments are legit too, pumps, check valves, add on check valves etc. Patience and it can be solved. Larry
OldProud Vet, I am dealing with a crank no start, I know it is fuel delivery because I have spark, it runs on carb cleaner.
1993 F150 4.9L. front tank on selector switch I hear a short 2 sec prime, different sound than when it was new.
I had the same strange sound on the rear selection, now it is gone. I need to get to Oreilly's to get their loan a tool test gauge for fuel pressure. and will report back. will a selector switch cause no start due to no fuel pressure/energizing?
