Cooled or not?

Having a little trouble determining if my `99 Ranger (auto) trans has a cooler or not. I think it does, but I may be confusing it with an oil (crankcase\engine) cooler. I'm having a little trouble these days twisting my head and neck around under there as I had neck surgery a couple months ago. I can easily see a cooler (?) of some sort through the grill (looks like a little radiator or heater core) and then there is a much smaller "finned" device under the truck, mounted (actually, not mounted - just kinda' "hanging" by metal tubing) between the rack and the flywheel area - can anyone help me understand - also, I've read here that the "stock" coolers are not too good - is that true? Thanks in advance - Glenn . . .

The second cooler you see is likely a power steering cooler.
and unless you spent big dollars on a trans cooler the factory one is better then most.

Thanks, didn't think at all that I might have a PWR Steer. cooler - but the one I can see through the grill (right\passenger side), in front of the radiator condensor - is that an engine or trans. cooler?

Thanks in advance - Glenn . . .

The one by the rack is p.s., and if you got the tow package, or off-road package, you got a trans. cooler, and a p.s. cooler, and a heavier duty radiator.

Thanks Ford_SIX - man I "guess" I have an off-road pkg. (?) It's a 4x4, has a (factory) "Sport" emblem\decal on the back-side of the bed and 4.10 gears, a block (and battery) heater, but other than that - I just do not know or can not seem to figure it out - how can I tell for SURE - and how can I tell EXACTLY which trans I have - I know it's a "4R..." - but can't seem to DEFINATELY DETERMINE if it's a "44" or "55" - E. A print-out I got from a dealer says, verbatim, "4R44/55E (???!!!) Thank you again - and thanks to ANYONE, in advance, who can help. Glenn...

Sounds like it may have some sort of "extreme duty" package. I know the sports have a p.s. cooler, but maybe the trans cooler is part of the same package as the batt. and block warmers?

Cooled or not?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-Oct-02 AT 10:59 PM (EST)]Thanks Jared - it'd be nice IF I do have some sort of "extreme" pkg. - I sure could use that type of assurance in my current financial state - I suppose the search goes on - it's been a great truck (65,000 miles) so far, I'm just concerned with TRANS LONGEVITY - had it "BG" flushed\cleaned & conditioned just before 30,000 miles - after the used car dealer I bought it from "serviced" the trans - WITH THE WRONG (Dexron) FLUID! What makes the story worse is they really only did a partial service (7 of about 10 or 11 qts) so the fluids were mixed - hard shifting started about 1,500 miles and 3 weeks later - I got them to pay for a flush from a very reputable (independent) shop. Thanks again - Glenn . . .
