In the late '80s, the manufacturer of Kawasaki oil filters, (OK, we'll just say Kawasaki) was busted for wadding up newspaper and shoving that inside the metal filter housing instead of using a good old pleated fiber filter like we're all used to seeing.

I was thinking, maybe whoever makes the filters for Motorcraft could do the same, in addition to shortening the filter housing, they should also wad up some old newspaper, cram it in their shorter can, and use that as yet another money saver too! The problem with this is they probably would not pass the savings on to the consumer, hmmmm... so maybe not such a great idea.

It sucks, it's sorta like some of the beverage manufacturers and soup manufacturers and cerial companies taking a few ounces out of the product and charging us the same price as it was when the product had more content. Then telling us we're still getting the same great product. Gotta love it!!!!

Enjoy,

That should be done.

They are still screwing us on the capacity by making the can smaller. It might only be a little smaller but IMO the filter is too small to begin with. I think the Fl1A would be a better size filter.

Just how much stuff are you guys thinking the filter is going to capture in 5K miles of driving that it needs to be so much larger?

I don't just look at it as filtering capacity I look at the volume of oil the filter holds. The antidrainback valve is supposed to be so critical on these engines so it would probably be a good idea to retain as much oil in the filter as possible at startup until the oil gets circulated fully.

If the anti-drainback has done it's job, there's no real importance to how much oil is in the filter.

Besides, isn't it like just a few 1/16'ths shorter?

Ooh! Ooh! I know why they did it! So they could fit a few more cases on a pallet, and quite a few more cases in a truckload

I agree with that. As long as the filter doesn't loose it's prime, then it will have pressure at start up regardless of how much oil the filter holds.

I reported the 5/16" difference in the other thread I started. That's what I come up with measuring the outside of the cases and that's with measuring the old one on the truck because I can't find any old ones in the stores in my area.

I cut apart my ols atyle non shortened Fl-820S and compared it to an Fl-1A I cut apart a couple days ago. Pics are below.

1A on left 820 on right.

1A top 820 bottom

820

1A

820 spacer under filter media. Over 1/2" space from center of dome to bottom of spacer in center.

There is a lot of space between the dome point on the can and the bottom of the filter cartridge. If the can was just shortened on the new filters and the media stays the same length I don't think it will matter as much as I originally thought.

Great job on opening up the filters. They are claiming that there is no difference in performance.
