I want to ditch my Superchips Flashpaq. But i enjoy the extra power and better mileage it provides. My question is it better to just regear or run a tuner? My truck has 37's and I want it to last for a long time. So long term is getting gears the best bet as far as longevity? And what would be best 4.30 or 4.56? I know the gears will cost more up front but I want the engine to last.
Also does a SCT tuner adjust the speedo or do I have to get something else for that?
Gears then the tuner...or since the tuner isn't much more, you could get both at the same time.
The gears will get you back to stock and recover most of your power and fuel economy. With 35s you go with 4.30s and with your 37s you'd go with the 4.56s.
With your 6.0, the SCT is able to adjust the speedo and a few other parameters you'll need to for the tire change. If you do get an SCT, hook up with the section sponsor Spartan and you'll wonder how you ever did without a tuner.
Somewhat related. I watched that Powerstroke Help guys video about running larger tires and gear ratios and how it affects the transmission. In his video he mentions that the tach should be around 2200RPM when driving to keep strain off the tranny. I have stock sized tires on my truck, and usually pull my holiday trailer (which is 7000lbs ish) around 1900RPM for long stretches (3-4 hours at a time) Will this negatively affect my trans? Anyone else notice they have more pulling power at >2000RPM then seem too lose it if the truck down shifts and goes around 2300RPM+. I noticed my truck pulls better at >2000...
First off... The sct will tune the tranny for the tires. For 35 and smaller tires the ford dealership can calibrate the speedo. Over 37 and you will need something like the superlift true speed. If you want longgivity delete the egr system and get apr studs. If your not towing and running 35's I'd stay stock gears and tune the truck. The sct is a better tuner with a better track record for the long haul. For the power stroke guy I wouldn't give him absolute stock in everything he says. if ford wanted the truck to tow stock in a certain rpm then with tow haul you would be there at 65-70 I think. As long as you arnt overheating the tranny and it isn't slipping I don't think the rpms are that big of a deal
I want to do this but I'm under warranty still I think. I'm at 44K. Is there a way to just block it off without removing the EGR cooler?
Yes, you can weld in some bypass plates into the y-pipes(or up-pipes). I would try to get a quality exhaust or muffler shot to do this as the metal that is in the bellows of those pipes is a softer metal relatively speaking and it will crack easily if you don't watch it.
Yes, the SCT does correct the speedo on the 6.0L trucks.
If you're still under warranty, deleting the EGR system isn't a good idea as Ford may likely void your warranty because of it. As soon as your warranty is up, go for it, in the meantime save your cash for the full delete kit and tuner.
