2000 PSD starting/running help!
Story line- Truck started up great and ran like it always has last night.
Go to start it today and i wait for it to prime and wait for the wait to start light etc. But then i notice the dash lights dimmed again. I start the truck and it runs for about 5mins then just stalls out of no were like i turned the ignition off. no sputter, just dead. So i go to start it again and the truck turns right over and idles around 5 to 10min then i go to put it in drive and it stalls again. Now when i turn the key to the on postion i notice the dash lights and cab light keep dimming every 20 seconds or so like theres a short or load present. And now the truck wont start. Ive checked the following-
Oil level
Fuel filter
Fuel pump
No codes
CPS changed 2 years ago(grey)
Batterys both 12.5
glow plugs
gpr
Im stumped on how it just dies out of no where. Any help would be appreciated. thanks
PSD are very power hungry beasts as they are computer driven w/high voltage injectors and loose connections will cause resistance, carbon build up and maybe even small electrical spikes.
Be sure to load test each battery and then fire the rig up and make sure your voltage goes above 13v. You should get about 14v or so and that means the alternator is charging the batteries.
Also if you have a chip then make sure it is well seated. I was having some issues with my truck and weird idles because my chip had built up some carbon on it's connections. I pulled the computer out with the chip, cleaned the contacts, put some electronic lube on each individual contact and put it back in w/ a new strap and it seems to have cleared up my issues.
I figured the chip issue out because I had just taken my truck to the shop and the guy there said there were codes in the computer's logs. I thought the chip could have had something to do with it and put my hand on it while it was running and the truck died as if I turned off the key. Now I can wiggle the thing all about and it does nothing to the truck.
There are some ideas, give'm a shot.
Also, be sure your dp is getting a good contact and that there isn't carbon built up on the contacts. Mine was being weird too and I had to pull the PCM out of the truck, clean the contacts and for peace of mind as you called it, I put some electronic lube on the contacts. I don't remember the name of it but you can get it from the store. I put it on each individual contact instead of spreading it across the board so as to avoid a short between pins but to ensure contact of each contact.
