Hooking together and having a tug of war is about the dumbest thing you can do with your truck. Well, unless you just really, really want to break something.
Like Krewat said the main thing is to not get yourself hurt or anyone else. Other then that as long as you are prepared to spent the money if something breaks go for it and have some fun!
As long as they don't do anything crazy with the chain/strap/rope and hurt themselves, it's just more money into our economy when they have to fix their trucks
I guess that's one positive way to look at it. I personally just don't understand it. We all know how much it costs just to maintain vehicles these days. And the price of repairs and new parts isn't exactly that easy on the wallet. Like I said, I guess I'm just the odd ball here. The last thing I would want to do is something that will cause major damage to my truck, simply to feed my own ego. But I guess if you have bottomless pockets, it really doesn't matter what or how much you tear up.
If you are pulling in the dirt, I don't see a problem. Same as Krewat, I've pulled on stumps and some of them didn't even budge, so the truck just dug holes. On the other hand, if you pull on the pavement in 4wd, something is likely to break.

I've pulled on stumps and all sorts of other immovable objects while on pavement.
I grew up in a little hick town and I'd hear this conversation daily in highschool. "MY CHEVROLET WILL OUT PULL ANY DANG FORD ANY DAY!" "LETS HOOK BUMPERS THEN!"
Next day "I don't know what happened but somehow my driveshaft broke and my bumper got ripped off..." or some variance. I'd couldn't help but think, what a bunch of rednecks. It's just dumb.
Most of the videos I've seen on you tube are plain scarry using hitch ***** for. Pulling points and little bitty straps. Just looks really dangerous we have broken bigger straps and yanked bumpers just pulling out stuck vehicles

Just my opinion though...
Ahhhh So it's the rednecks that do this huh? Hmmm I must of been sick that day. Don't 'member getting that thar memo.
i got stock 4.10 gears and i dont know what hes got. i got extnded cab longbed and hes got extended cab short bed. i didnt hook to the disel but i hooked to a mud truck with i think 38 swampers and a bilt 351M in dirt and we just sat there and spun when we got the chain tight first but when we put some slack in it and let it rip i yanked him down his driveway. we tied a sweat shirt to the middle of the chain to keep it from going through my back glass. i know it sounds stupid but on the farm pulling out tractors with tractors chains break alot and for some reson this keeps them on the ground. yea i think the disel chickened out or his daddy wont let him us his truck. i think it would have been close and he thought he had no problem becouse he has the tow button on his shifter i tryed to tell him that just changes the shift points but he wont listen. he talks alot of crap and has never backed any of it up. oh and hooking up trucks is a good way to waist time here in the middle of nowhere so dont hate on it. if we arnt doing this we just get in to trouble with the cops. fixin stuff isnt that expensive if you get parts from junk yards and do it your self these garages will rape your wallet. these trucks are bilt ford tough anyways right?

when me and my buddy hooked up we made the chain really short so if it did break it would just hit our trailgates. i did it just to shut him up about his duramax and his ifs getting so much better traction than my truck. He had 285 bfg and i'm riding on 325/65r18 nitto terras so you can only imagine the ride i took him for lol.
