Public safety personnel are investigating a two-vehicle head-on collision that claimed the lives of both drivers Thursday morning on U.S. Highway 95 in Mineral County.
The accident occurred approximately 44 miles south of Hawthorne, Nev., at 2:45 a.m., according to Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Chuck Allen said.
Troopers believe the two vehicles involved; a Mini-Cooper and a Ford van were traveling from opposite direction on the roadway.
Troopers say no one else was involved. Both drivers died at the scene of the crash, Allen said.
Once next of kin is notified, NHP will release the names of the victims. Both vehicles had out-of-state license plates. Traffic is being diverted in both directions around the crash scene, Allen said.
I have been down that stretch of road a few times. It is very boring at night and very easy to fall asleep. The speed factor alone makes it dangerous, but you have to be crazy to drive fast through the Nevada desert at night, there are so many animals running around out there it's just a matter of time before you hit a mule deer, antelope, wild horse, wild burro, or cow.
