BLOUNTVILLE - A hitch just might have saved the lives of a North Carolina couple who found themselves dangling off an interstate bridge Monday.
Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Tim Wolfenbarger said the latching system of a hitch connecting a 1999 Ford Explorer and a Prowler camper was all that kept the SUV from crashing onto Highway 394.Thomas Tatton IV, 56, of King, N.C., and his wife, Peggy Tatton, 52, were traveling south on Interstate 81 about 11:20 a.m. when the camper began to sway.Thomas Tatton told Wolfenbarger that he thought a large motor home went by him at a higher speed and believed the draft from that caused the camper's movement. The camper's sway got bigger and bigger until it overturned, sending the Explorer across the bridge.A Sullivan County Volunteer Fire Department member said when rescuers arrived at the scene, the couple were already out of the vehicle. The vehicle also clipped a power pole at the bridge, which caused power throughout Blountville to go out.Wolfenbarger said the Tattons were wearing seat belts when the wreck happened, and between that and the hitch holding, the couple were not seriously injured.Thomas Tatton received minor scrapes and abrasions, and his wife was awaiting X-rays to determine the extent of her injuries, said Wolfenbarger. ive got a pic of it, but not sure how to insert it. heres a link to the page though.
thanks for posting the link to it. its free registration too, just have to enter your email address. my cousin is a cop over here and he was telling me that the guy was doing 70 mph towing that camper too. another wreck he was at the day before yesterday was a guy in an isuzu trooper towing a 4-wheeler trailer doing 60-70 in a 35. locked it up and left black marks 100 feet long. ran off the side of a cliff and collapsed both lungs, broke a bunch of ribs and has severe head trauma. people just need to learn to drive responsibly when they towing, whether they are over the weight limit or not.
Yeah, that was definitely a tail-wagging-the-dog situation. He should have had a heavy pickup or Suburban/Excursion to tow a trailer that size. Lucky to be alive. Lucky he didn't kill anyone else.
