'00 Cam Sensor

Hi all,
My cousin down in Texas is looking to buy a 2000 F-250. He says the only thing wrong with the truck is the cam sensor. I have searched here and google and I can't answer his questions.
1. He wants to know how easy it is to get the the Cam Sensor and how much trouble it is. How many hours it will take etc. He has great mechanic skills so that wont be a problem.
2. Can you get the Cam Sensor at any auto parts store or do you have to special order it or what?

Thanks,
Taylor

Less than $25 at Ford. They probably won't even have to go back to their shelves to get it, just reach under the counter.

Fifteen minutes to replace, even for a first-timer. See:
http://www.guzzle7pt3.com/cps.php

However, I'm surprised that any seller with a bad CPS doesn't just replace it to sell the truck easier.

I would change it and start the engine before money changes hands.

'Course, maybe he'll then have to pay more for it....

Ford still has a "recall" on the cps.. if it hasn't been replaced already... Part and installation is free... just call the local Ford dealer with the VIN # to make a appointment..

The cam sensor itself takes less than 5 minutes to swap out. You just need a 10 mm socket, extension, and ratchet. Climb up under the truck and locate the CPS just above and on the passenger's side of the crank pulley. Unbolt it, pop the old one out, and put the new one in. The only difficult part is the old one sometimes takes a bit of "convincing" to wiggle out of the hole.

As for the CPS itself, that subject has been an issue for a while. It's one of the most common components to fail on the 7.3L. Ford has issued a recall on the CPS and will replace it for free. The problem is that the new updated CPS causes an entirely new set of problems. These problems include rough idle, loss of fuel mileage, and check engine codes being thrown.

Here is a thread I posted up just the other day that shows the differences between the original (black) CPS and the new (grey) CPS:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...s-testing.html

Most people prefer to stick with the black one if at all possible. Riffraf Performance is a sponsor here, and I just picked up a black CPS from him this week (ordered Monday and it arrived on Wednesday... talk about fast service). I think he may have a few left in stock. Check with him and find out for sure.

Where at in Texas? If he wants and he is close, I will change the CPS out for him and show him everything there is to know.
