OK, stupid question time. Can anyone describe the noise made, if any, when the engine is regen and if no noise, how do you know it is in regen? Is it OK to turn the engine off when in regen? Thanks
If you have the lastest flash it will read "Cleaning Exhaust Filter" in the message center. Best not to just shut it off while in regen. Your exhaust has to get superheated to allow the burning of the soot in the DPF.
Mine does not make much of a different from normal operation, but others have notice a change in engine performance and sound during the regen.
If it is one thing that I have learned about the new 6.4 (not so new now though) is there seems to be quite a bit of variation of the engine experiences.
So best thing to do is get the lastest reflash and go from there.
How old is the truck? Miles on it? Did you just buy it?
I have not noticed any noise when my truck goes into regen. Most of the time I dont know it is in regen until I notice my boost pressure has dropped(just got the latest reflash done and has not gone into regen since, about 100 miles ago). If possible you should drive until your regen cycle is complete.
I guess I don't have the latest flash as I've never gotten that message. I do have this unexplained, undetermined noise. I'm guessing it has to do with regen, Ford hasn't heard it. The truck is about 3 months old, 2008 F250 PSD Super Cab 4x4 Job 1, less than 5000 miles on it.
if you have the power sliding rear window open it when you suspect its in regen and roll in to the throttle. Mine makes a hell of a jet engine sound whens its regeing' coming from the tail pipes.
You should hear a different exhaust tone when you take off from a stop ( like when getting off the highway, then taking off again ). You'll also hear a lot of turbo flutter when stopping, or when you shut it off. Lastly, if you go into regen at idle ( N/A with latest flash ), the idle will be about 1100 RPM. When you put your foot on the brake, the idle goes to normal. Best to drive til the regen is complete. Hope this helps
You won't hurt anything if you have to shut it down while in regen. It will stop when you go into park and start again where it left off (it will vary depending how long you drove around while in regen before shuttting down).

This is true, but be careful as this exhaust will be super hot if you do that.
I hated the way the galvanized metal looked so I painted my tips with black engine block paint. Burned it right off!
Now thats funny. If you scuff it real good and use the roll/spray on bed liner material it will hold up. Did this on a set of headers and it held up really well. The key is scuffing it up so there is a surface for the paint/material to adhere to.
Regen sounds - Job 1 trucks did some funky stuff during a regen so its a good idea to get the latest flash. Be sure to b#### slap the dealer for not doing it before selling you the truck. Better ask about the venturi tee for the radiator too (look in the tech folder at the top of the 6.4 forum for more info). My job 3 with the newest flash doesnt do anything exciting during a regen. I can tell when it starts because I have to give it more pedal and the engine tone changes just enough to notice. Then about 30 seconds later the message displays. I didnt realize I was in a regen 1 time and went to pass another car. I was doing about 30, mashed the pedal and the engine made lots of "rattling" sounds but it functioned like usual (maybe down on power a little). Thats the only time I have heard the rattle and I am sure its because I was trying to accelerate harder than normal.
this thing stock with programmer and DPF delete kit. it beats dumping money into other vehicals for the same performance. and out performs edge with elite diesel programing. oh yea 17+ mpg in town and 20+ on the Highway.
answer to your question: the tone of your truck while in regen will be deeper and you can also know when you stop, or you are in park that the rpms will rise to about 1200, ford now has a new program so you can tell when your truck is in regen and it will display on your instrument cluster, when it goes into regen you do need to drive till it goes off, drive for about 20 minutes at 35 to 50 miles per hour. My truck does not have the regen any more because of the programing that i have done from elite diesel performance they are great and well worth the money. before when my truck would go into regen my exhaust temprature wold rise to about 800 degrees now it is at 400, and that is with the dpf delete pipe.
Thanks for all the response. I'll get the dealer to get the flash done. What I find frustrating is I had it to a dealer (not the one I purchased it from) for a noise coming from the engine which they couldn't get it to duplicate and they never suggested regen. From what I've read on the forum I'm pretty much convinced that is what it is. I'll also ask about the venturi tee also. The dealer I bought the truck from is too far away to reasonably go back there for service, but I had hoped that any dealer would welcome the opportunity foe some more warrenty/service work. Again thanks for all the response. Too often the guy who services the vehicle is not on top of what's going on with them!
I asked the service manager at my local dealer to point out who in his garage has been schooled/certified for 6.4 service. He showed me two guys, one a tech, the other is the shop manager. I talk to both of them frequently, I think it helps that they also know that I learn as much as I am able about the motor too. You may want to try this out at your home.
BTW, to date, my dealership has done 1 cab off procedure for 2 failed bolts on the exhaust down pipe where it attaches behind the motor. It's a small dealer but there is a good track record around here for these motors. It's cool that I know the tech's well enough that they will share info that they discover as well.
