I'm getting geared up to change out the original (governed carb) distributor in my F7, I have the new oil pump and hex drive oil pump shaft, and an 89 302 mustang distributor to work with. The distr. has the large rectangular module hanging on the side, is this one compatible with the pertronix conversion? All of the pics on their site show the older version distr with the vacuum advance.
A mustang dist. wont work in a 292, so am sure it is a no go in the 279 too. With the proper drive gear installed (one tooth more for the 279?) a 292 dist. will fit. With a 57 and later dist, Pertronix module can be dropped in easy. A lot of guys are converting their late model dizzy to Delco style ignitions. www.yblocksforever.com has some good instructions on how to do it.
Yove got a TFI modual from a EEC-IV system. This will not work with a petronix. Check to see if the points and such are the same in the lincoln dizzy as a simlar year Y distributor. Then one would belive you could just add the y blocks petronix unit.
Thanks for the responses. Comparing the original distributor to the Mustang unit, the housings are the same diameter but the shaft on the newer unit is shorter and thus won't locate the drive gear. Now I have backed up & punted, I've got a rebuilt 292 distr on order, 1964 style. Will still need to change the drive gear to the larger FE style, but everything else should be compatible..

Good. It sounded like you were changing the carburetor also, which will need to be done too. '57 and later. Earlier wont work. If going with an Autolite 2100 2V some trial and error may be needed given the weight of your truck. I wouldnt start with anything smaller than a 1.14 venturi. Come to think of it, I have a 1.08 venturi with BIG throttle bore of 1.55. Came from a '71 390 (not sure about the displacement but it wasnt an SBF) truck. Need to find out what the deal is with the big bore and relatively small venturi. A 1.14 venturi Mustang 2100 has something close to 1.43 in. throttle bore.
On the '64 dist. a Pertronix unit for Ford 272-312 will work fine.
