Is it a really tough job to get the passenger side exh. manifold off on 97 4.6 4WD? It is leaking from the front cylinder, toward the front of the vehicle. I cant tell if the manifold is cracked, or if it is just leaking from a busted gasket. I can access it from the wheelwell, but I guess I am worried about snapping off a stud or something. As I am looking at the manifold from the passenger side wheelwell, is there supposed to be a bolt or stud to the right(front) of the first cylinder outlet? There is nnot one, but I am used to looking at 60's and 70's ford manifolds with two bolt holes on either side of each cylinder. HELP!!!
The passenger side is a piece of cake to remove compared to the driver's side. Yes, there should be 2 studs per exhaust port. Studs snapping off is a common problem. Since you're missing one in the problem area, then it needs to be repaired in order to get the manifold to seal up again, even with a new gasket.
Is it hard to get the old studs out? If they snap, is it a pain - like you have to drill out with an easy-out or something? Arent those aluminum heads?
I replaced my passenger side manifolsd a few years ago. I used plenty of penatrating oil and gave it time to soak in. Removing the studs in the block is pretty easy, I thought the studs that connect the exhaust system were more difficult. I ended up cutting them off and buying new studs for the collector. When you do the job I found it best to remove the inner fender well to provide extra access. Good luck.
I just did my passenger side a few months back, it really was much easier than I expected. I would say 2-3 tops. Definitely buy a set of bolt extractors (auto stores sell an Irwin Set for less than $25). I got the studs from Rock Auto for under $10 and you can even get the gaskets there for under $10. Don't forget to order new flange bolts and nuts since it is just easier to just cut them or burn them off to pull the manifold out.
I asked my local Ford Dealership what they get for this fix and they said at least $1000 till they see how many studs are busted. I did the whole job for less than $30 and it wasn't bad at all. I had 3 studs broken toward the rear.
Good Luck!
So, i have not actually inspected the expy yet, but from what ya'll are describing this sounds like an issue i am having. If a broken stud is the case, does the whole manifold have to come out to remove the broken stud and gaskets be replaced or??
