Hi, no it is not hard to steer it is actually a loss of steering for about 3-5 seconds with no warning, steering does not respond, then is returns to normal. It happened when he turned the wheel to change lanes or in the process of changing lanes/turning or shortly after changing lanes.
The truck goes where it wants to go because there is no steering for that 3-5 seconds. Can you explain how the ps pump may cause the steering loss or the slipping ps pulley. We are showing all information to the mechanic.
It just started as well and has happened once every day since the brakes/shocks/ball joints/sway bar bushings/wheel alignemtn were done. It never happened in one year of ownership with lots of driving.
I would double check and make sure everything in the steering was done right and tightened to spec and no loose parts like a tie rod end. That includes wheel bearings. If all checks ok, make sure alignment is ok, especially caster. Make sure it's not positive. If that checks out ok, then I would suspect a valving problem in the steering gear. Without actually having the truck here to look at, that's the approach I would take.

Wow, that's scary. When the PS pump ceases to function you still have steering but it is very hard to steer (safety precaution). It sounds to me like the pump is possibly locking up at times, losing pressure, or something is getting on the PS pully like water or oil to temporarily cause it to slip and not pump. You need constant good pressure for the steering to work well. Again, I would suspect the PS box also but you said they changed it. When you say "steering does not respond" I'm assuming that normal steering disappears for a few seconds and it goes into the "very hard to steer" mode. The only other scenario would be total tempory lock-up which is another issue.
Hi there. Yes it is total loss of steering for 3-5 seconds not loss of power steering and the truck goes where it wants. It finally happened to the mechanic today and scared the crap out of him. He said the ABS sensor and the speed sensor etc. are the problem..so we will see.
Thanks

Uh, big clue, does this happen with your foot on the brake or not?
Hi there. Wanted to check in. It was the right wheel sensor. There is a bulletin talking about the sensor but it stated that the brakes would be the only thing affected. Well surprise..when there are faulty signals in the system steering can be affected as well and in my opinion possibly other things. Also good to note is that just because the ABS light is on does not mean the system is disengaged it can mean the system has a faulty signal. See the bulletin on this and add our steering problem to it. It has not happened in a week of serious driving.
So far I have seen reports of everything replaced except the PS pump and it hasn't cured the issue. You did experience a sudden lack of proper steering. I'm assuming this doesn't happen every day. Mine went 3 days until today. Mine isn't a sudden steering drift, it goes back and forth violently after making a sharp low speed turn.............sometimes.
My steering does the exact same thing after a slow sharp turn, sometimes! I just checked the steering shaft to see if the universal joint in it was binding up but that wasn't it. The next thing I have to check is with the front universals.
If anyone has had this happen either, let me know!
Hi there clifford. Also check your thrust washer, snap ring and dust seal for the hub. We had a back and forth severe front end back and forth and these were the problem for that.
Hope it works out..
Hello bohiaa. I hope you are not speaking about us here. I had the same problem as clifford and that is what worked for our truck. Providing solutions or ideas for others who may be having a similar problem is the point of this forum. You have provided nothing positive here at all. It took 3 mechanic shops to "clean our our ash tray" before they finally fixed our problem.
These guys will have you cleaning out the ash tray to try to fix it..........
bohiaa; You already got kicked off another thread. Why don't you take your '93 f-150 and your wise cracks and go elseware?
We're not all certified Ford mechanics here but we can often come to a conclusion through our own experiences which can enable us to fix it ourselves or keep from getting ripped off by unscrupulous and/or unknowledgeable mechanics.
