I am looking at buying a 250 with 7.3L and have some concerns about the automatic transmissions. It has 220,000 miles on it. What are the life expectancy of these 4speed automatics? What gears do they have? and is it possible to put a standard behind a 7.3l that is currently driving an automatic? And would the transfer case match up to the standard?
If it has not had a rebuild yet it will need one soon. They are decent transmissions but will not hold up long if you have decent power mods.
Yes a 5 speed can be put in but you will need an awful lot of stuff and it is best done with a donor vehicle available. Not positive on the TC but I believe as long as it is 4 wd to begin with it should be fine. Others will verify if I am right or wrong.
Welcome to the diesel threads. You will be happy with that vehicle especially if you hang around here for awhile.
the E4OD can handle some power. In stock form it will not hold up though. With that many miles on it, it could go anytime. If you want a good E4OD you're going to pay at least 3k for one. Like Neal said you can swap a 5pd into it, but a donor truck would be your best bet you'll need a lot of things from it.
There are some that have gone much farther than 220K miles on an e4od but you mostly hear about the ones that didn't hold up on this site. Not many drop in here to say how good their trans has been.
It's a good bargaining ploy to use on the seller. A good rebuild will cost $1500-2000. A great one will be around $3000 and a bullet proof one will be over $5000
My 2 cents
The dealer wants $4900 its a regular cab with a 6 1/2ft flatbed power windows and locks, but either the gpr is out or it has a gp or two out. It puffed white smoke until it heated up, a good excuse for saying that it needs to have the heads rebuilt, and it needs a full set of tires (which I have on hand off of my ranger that I frontflipped LTX AT2 LR:E) what do you think a good starting offer would be. I was thinking $3,800
Is there any indication of maintenance records? Take a long hard look at the fluids, smell them for "Burnt Odor" and at least one member on this forum tastes all of the fluids. YUK!
It may be money well spent to have the truck looked at by an independent diesel mechanic. With a list of things that need "Fixin' " will be a great bargaining point or a real good reason to walk away from this truck.
I already have it arranged to have a fluid metals test done at the local university and I have a shop I am taking it to have it run through I already ID the gpr or atleast 3 gp that are bad
