egr pro or con

so my 04 6.0 with 94000 trouble free miles started acting up last week, sluggish and rough on start up, black smoke on acceleration so I did the search and decided the egr was acting up. disconnected it last night and the truck runs a lot better this morning without the egr plugged in. Still a little sluggish and a little smoke but a lot better. Now my question is do I remove, clean, and replace egr and plug back in or leave it unplugged?? have at it boys!

I would pull it out and clean it...I used carb cleaner and a small toothbrush. Worked well after that...Just make sure not to get the cleaner up in the housing where the wires are.

If you unplug it your PCM will go into a safe EPA strategy that limits the range of the turbo veins and fuels differently to reduce emissions, which makes less power and efficiency.

Delete it. Less hassles down the road.

If you really had trouble free miles (not reflashed with the EPA flash), I would Clean it (sounds like you may still have some blow by past it.) put it in but not plug it in.

Or Clean it, plug it in, and get a SCT X3 with a custom tune and the EGR duty cycle set to 0%. No code, no epa mode, no measuring of MAF drop during EGR valve operation (because it never operates). All smiles.
