Question down pipe alignment

I've had a bad exhaust leak at the joint between the 2 sections of my down pipe. I tackled this over the weekend and found it was only slipped together about 1/4 inch. After slipping it fully together and checking everywhere for clearance, I find it no longer aligns with the cat. It now hangs over 1 inch higher. Just about the amount I slipped the 2 parts together. Has anyone else had the down pipe not align with the rest of the system and what did you do?

Release all of the hangers on your exhaust system including the one you just tightened when you eliminated the exhaust leak, now you should have enough movement to fit everything together. After everything is in place then tighten all of the clamps and hangers.

QUESTION:
Why don't you take this importunity to just eliminate the Kitty and put in its place a straight piece of pipe? A CAT replacement pipe is cut to the exact length and if I recall they cost around $45.00.

Or if you want to keep the cork, I mean cat, you could just redrill the holes in the frame for the cat hanger.

I replaced my stock system with the tymar 3 to 4" exhaust a couple of weekends ago the straight pipe even hits the cat hanger when I bolted it back on the frame. I need to take the hanger back off and store it with the rest of the old exhaust.

Good catch on the visual! IMO, There is going to be a huge demand for cats on our diesels if the "Big Brother" get his way. Emissions for our diesels are going to get tougher making a lot of people wish they didn't toss theirs in the trash.

Put it in the original form and Instead of using a U-Clamp use one of this.

That is why my old exhaust system is sitting in the corner of the barn.

Thanks for the replies. I got it forced together for now while the truck is in the body shop. (Hit and run caught the rear corner below the tail light).
In "forced", I mean my rubber hangers are now pointing toward the cab instead of pointing down at the ground. This pivoted the system up and forward to meet the down pipe. I hope to get it back tomorrow and I'll try re-hanging the rest of the system this weekend. I'm in California so no inspection (yet). The suggestion of a cat delete pipe would give me more clearance because the cat body wants to hit the heat shield above it.. I'll get pics when I get the truck back.
