8.8" vs 9"

ok im looking for something different than this 7.5 in my ranger, i want something stronger for when i drop a 302 in. i have heard that the 7.5 and 8.8 axles are the same but the 8.8 ring gear is larger if this is true can i put an 8.8 ring gear in my 7.5 and make it a 8.8 if not what is the pro's and con's of the 8.8 vs the 9" how much stronger is the 9 and will it take more horses to push. Anyones input is wanted i have no experience with rearends thank you all in advance

Some or all 4.0 Rangers came with the 8.8. You should be able to get a complete unit from a junk yard and swap the whole thing out. An 8.8 is more than strong for a 302 and is much more modern than a 9, which would have to be custom-built to fit a Ranger. The 7.5 might even last a while if you have a 5-speed and don't tow or carry loads since the Ranger itself is so light.

thanks for the reply. does anyone know if it is true that i can put a 8.8 ring and pinion in my 7.5 and make a 8.8 is that all that is different?????

I have a locked 7.5" in my ranger with a 300 hp 302 and 4.10's pushin 33" BFG's. I am amazed it has not blown apart yet. So you may want to stick with it till it does. I have a Gm (yeah I know...) 12 bolt in the shed waiting till it does blow. Now the Dana 28 is another story. Nine axle shafts blown there. Need to do a Dana 44 swap soon!
