I tried searching before i posted this so go easy on me if this has been covered over & over again please.
I'm setting up a 77 F150 4x4 regular cab long box for my daughter to drive. It's a 351 truck with auto right now.
The idea of transplanting a later model 5.4 with an auto trans is an idea that I can't get out of my mind.
I guess my main reasons are for the fuel injection/reliability of the 5.4 & the gas mileage with the OD auto trans that lets the engine cruise at such low RPM's at hwy speeds.
My 77 has an NP205 married to the C6 right now. gears are 3.50's
tossing the engine & trans into the truck & making it work doesn't scare me, But i stumble on the driveline to the front axle.... where do you split things? go divoced NP205? or use the late model Tcase with elect shift or??
open to alternate suggestions as well, one of my big goals is getting the rpm's down at cruising speeds.
I'm not one to shy away from an EFI project but I don't like the mod motors, to me they are needlessly complicated, physically large, and offer no better milage than a properly prepared pushrod EFI motor. In both cases the way to go about a project like this is to find a complete donor vehicle and transplant the powertrain and electronics. A 5.0/AOD combo would deliver the milage you want and would be considerably easier to mount given the fact the 302 was available in this truck. If that's a 351w in there you could also convert it to efi and add an OD tranny and transfer case from an '87-'96 truck.
honestly for your daughter a 300-6 with an AOD or 5 speed manual tranny like the M5od or zf would be awesome. its a very reliable motor, it would be easy for her to learn on and would get pretty good mpg if you set it up right.
my first vehicle was a 73 f250 hiboy with 300-6 and np435 4 speed. was the best truck ever and really took care of me. granted i put it thru its paces and i learned a lot performing my own work that to this day has been a benefit.
