Help troubleshooting a blowing sound...

When I accelerate I hear either a blowing or sucking sound that increases as the throttle is pressed. I can not find any loose connections along the intake path or the exhaust. I don't see any holes either. This is my first diesel/turbo engine and I'm a little lost. Could this be a wastegate issue? Any help is greatly appreciated.

'01 Excursion, 7.3 diesel, 4x4, no mods. The truck is treated rather well and has been. 130k-ish miles

That sound is the turbo doing its job, don't sweat it. Welcome to FTE, stick around and you'll learn a lot about your truck, as well as how to spend your hard earned money on it

Thanks... this is not normal turbo noise though. It has affected acceleration too. I've had the truck for 2yrs now and this is a new noise.

Can you describe the sound better? Is it there all the time, or only when the motor is cold?

Welcome to FTE.

Have you checked the rubber boots on the IC pipes. There are 4 on the pipes going to the intercooler and 2 orange ones going down into the intake manifolds. Make sure they are clean and tight.

It’s there all the time and gets louder as I accelerate. When I let off the throttle it quiets back down.
I have not checked the rubber boots. I will this evening when I get off work.
The truck is completely stock.

The exhaust back pressure valve may be sticking too.

If this is a new sound, then you haven't found the leak yet.
Check very carefully both the orange and the blue boots.
The orange boots, if you don't have them clamped just right, the boost pressure will push them up, off the boot.

This has my vote. First time I heard mine I thought something was seriously wrong with my truck.....

It ended up being a tear in one the blue boots. Good call guys. I'm so glad it's an easy fix. Thanks for the help!
