This problem has been driving me nuts for a year now and I don't want to just start throwing parts at it. I know it is something simple but I am lost.
It has intermittent power to the fuel pumps. It doesn't seem to matter which tank it is on when the pumps quit. I have run a hot wire from the fuse box to the back of the dual tank switch in the dash. I have to move the hot wire from one side of the switch to the other depending on which tank I am using. This works fine for me but I am afraid one of the kids will flip the switch without disconnecting the hot wire. DEAD SHORT & flame on. Without the hot wire sometimes it will run for a few minutes but mostly not at all. Any ideas where I should start looking? 1987 Ranger 4x4 auto extended cab V6.
Thanks
PS: Any one know where I can find a replacement rear tank for this.
Thanks 87 XLT. I have been putting the hot wire on the tank switch red wire for one tank and the brown with white trace for the other. Now with the hot wire on the pink and black wire I can switch tanks without changing the wire. So it is now safe from anyone moving the switch. When grounding the test hole on the inertia switch plug I still have no power to the pumps unless the hot wire is hooked to the tank switch. So we have made it safe from fire but I still have not found the problem. Any more ideas on where to look? Any body? I might add that the inertia switch has long been removed. I had this problem weather the inertia switch was pluged in or not. Also the Rainger has been rolled over and the inertia switch had to be reset before I finely removed it all together. I got the truck after it had been rolled and had set for 5 years because the PO could not get it to start and did not know about the inertia switch. Any help in finding why It has no voltage to the pumps or tank switch would sure help. Fuses are good. Is there a relay or something else I should look at?
Pop the hood & the pump relay is under a plastic cover on the passenger side fender.
At the relay & with the key on, you should see voltage on solid red & tan/light green (from the main relay)
you should see voltage on solid yellow (from a fuse link & hot all the time)
As mentioned at the link I gave you when you ground tan/light green the relay should close & put voltage on orange/light blue.
Next stop is the inertia switch (if you still had one) & then the frame mount pump & dash switch.
Thanks 87 XLT. I will go up to my parts trucks (100 miles away) this weekend and get an inertia switch. The relay is new and checks out in another Ranger. Than I will trouble shoot the wiring as you suggested. The only parts store we have is a small Nappa. They tell me that ford discontinued the rear tank and that they can't get a replacement. Any one know where to get one?
I have a 84 dual tank Ranger, but it is carbed not EFI so my switching set-up is different. As for rear tanks, hit the salvage yards................Saw 2 of them in the same yard here.

Thanks for the info. But I live on a remote island and there is no salvage yards. Believe me I have looked and I haven't found another dual tank Ranger of any vintage. It's one of the reasons I picked up this truck. I haven't pulled the rear tank yet to see if it is salvageable. And I can't see it with the skid plate in the way. Being in this salt air and the rust we have here makes me think it would not be cost affective to try and repair it hehehe. I would be willing to pay to have someone pull a good one and ship it to me$$$$$

I have a J-yard trip planned soon, I will see if they are still there and get a price!.
Will do,.......Got a T-Bird w/ a ign. switch problem so I will cruise thru the Ranger row on the way.
Well the EBay tank fell through. The price of $65.00 and shipping of $35.00 was good. But he said when he went to ship it the cost of shipping alone was $235.00. So I had to cancel.
I would greatly appreciate it if ya would see what you can find. Thanks
