I am converting a 79 f-100 fuel tank to a bed fill. I need to go from 1 1/2" to 2 1/4 inch OD. If I go to a local exhaust shop, will they have a peice of 1 1/2" pipe and can they stretch it that much without splitting? Will standard exhaust pipe work fine for a gas pipe?
While I've got your attention. There is a second pipe to allow air to escape while filling. Would you just plug this off or have them drill a hole in the side of the 1 1/2" and have a peice of 3/4" coming out?
Yes exhaust tubing should work just fine. That is quite the stretch. I don't think the problem is so much whether it would split as much as keeping it on the tool. As you expand the pipe beyond a certain point, it begins to become conical, which causes it to slide off the tool. I would think to do what you are after would probably require joining different sized tubes and just cleaning up the weld.
Most exhaust shops carry 1 3/4" tube, but they can sometimes neck down the end of the the tube, then they could expand the other end, but going from 1 3/4" to 2 1/4" might be challenging. If they use a good high quality heavy gauge tube, it will stretch that far.
I suggest you ask a muffler shop. But don't do it over the phone, talk to them in person.
Thanks for the help. I've had a few mufflers done over the years and never saw a pipe necked down. I'll swing buy and talk shop with some of the local guys.
