Power Problem

Hello everyone, I have been gradually losing power over the last year and figured out that my cat was plugged ( I dont have a muffler at all) and so tonight I gutted the cat. I wanted to hear how the truck sounded with everything off (no pipe at all just the stock down pipe so I started it up.) my concern is that I really think it was louder with the plugged cat on it. it didnt sound like I thought it would. I felt the exhaust at the end of the downpipe and I dont think there is as much pressure as there should be. what do you guys think?
Things I know: turbo spins great and blades are clean, air filter is new, cleaned out fuel bowl (and screen) and new fuel filter, replaced mechanical fuel pump last year. thanks guys....

Your exhaust pipe changes the sound of the engine. The diameter and length. Example think of a instrument a trumpet is small and thus creates a high pitched sound as air is packed into a small area, where a tuba is massive and less air pressure is maintained and they both have bell at the end which is similar to a mega phone which allows for amplification of sound over a short area. also the length affects the sound as gases expand in the tube smaller area creates more back pressure and in turn more high pitch while larger tubes allow for more expansion and in turn results in less pressure, and a lower tone. Also there will be very little pressure coming from your exhaust w/o the engine reved up as the turbo is essentially doing nothing while idling, and the more fule and rpms the engine is turning the more it will wind up and the more air and exhaust pressure will need to be releived from the cylinders.

Neal, I can get a 3" downpipe that bolts up to the cat for about $150.00 here in town. Is that a good deal?

Not all that bad. Search online you can get the same one that bolts to the cat for around $90 - $100.
If you want to leave the cat off you can get one without that connection for the same price. Just have to look around.

1994-1997 Ford 7.3L Power Stroke Three Inch Aluminized Steel Down Pipe

Here is one for $87 but is not for cat connection
MBRP 3 inch Aluminized Down Pipe<br> (1994 - 1997 Ford Powerstroke 7.3)

$109 for cat connection:
Diesel Truck Performance Parts & Accessories

There are better deals out there just try different searches using different words. Look for awhile and you will find what you want.

$150 ain't bad after looking at the prices lately but they can be bought for around $100 plus shipping.

Good Luck,
Neal

Thank you Neal for looking that up. My main goal is more power. I have an older 29 foot 5th wheel that is pretty heavy. I have heard that I will get better gas mileage by gutting the cat. Is this true?

Anything you do to free up the exhaust will let your engine run easier. Delete the cat, and use a low restriction muffler, or delete it too. It will certainly help the engine breath.

I would get rid of the cat. Look at some of those links or do your own search. You can get a turbo back exhaust system for around $350 +/-.
If you pay $150 for a DP you can just double that and almost have a complete exhaust system including the DP.

Open up your exhaust and intake and you will be amazed at the difference.

You can go to your local Pep Boys or similiar and get a piece of 4" pipe with a 45° angle in it and get a 6637 filter from Fleet filters.com and a big hose clamp.

Remove your intake box and installl the pipe onto your rubber intake hose. Then put the 6637 filter on the otherside of the pipe. It will lay where your old filter box was.

Some have used a 3" PVC pipe with a 45° from Lowe's instead of the metal pipe. NAPA also has a pipe but it isn't chrome but will work fine. It is a 4" exhaust pipe 45° bend. They sell the 6637 filter also but are a bit more. You can get the filter at a discount just tell them you are a AAA member.

I agree with all written above, but I would recomend check your EBPV, because it could be obstructed or dont open complety, just a thougth.

I just bought a downpipe for 140 with tax from tymar. It is 3inch on top and 4inch on bottom. Ordered three 4 foot pieces of 4inch exhaust on sale from summit for 17.95 each and one 90 degree elbow for 35.00. I will have no cat and no muffler and a complete new exhaust exiting in front of rear tire for under 250.00. Pretty good deal I think. If you don't need the cat in your state get rid of it. Muffler is just extra parts as well.
