bad slave?

Alright I have a 1988 F150 with a 300 and a 5speed. I was trying to teach the girlfriend how to drive a manual. She studdered a few times at the start and the truck rocked alot, she finally got the hang of it. The next day I noticed that when I pushed the clutch in it would only come half way out and the shifts kept getting harder. Finally a week went by and I wanted to try and bleed the clutch to make the clutch pedal come all the way out, so I had someone push the clutch pedal in while I opened the bleeder screw and we did this many times. The first time Brake fluid shot out of the screw like it had air in it, and the rest of the attempts it barely trickeled out. I attempted to try and bleed the slave more and honestly after the 20th time and 100 pumps later there is still no pressure building up. I can push the clutch all the way down and it wont come back up. I checked the back of the master cylinder and there is no leaks as well as the front and the line looks in good shape. I took the service cover off and I cant see any leaks from the line to the slave. I did change the clutch about 2 months ago and checked the slave then and there were no leaks and it worked properly. I'm stumped and I have a feeling its the slave and im not too excited to drop the tranny.

sorry for the long post

Unfortunately, it sounds like you might need a new slave, but then again, I too have an '88 F-150, 5 spd., and the master failed on that. However, months later, all of the fluid disappeared, and I got low pedal, but refilled and it's functioning fine. I suspect the fluid leaked from the slave into the bell housing area.

If your slave is going bad, you might be able to buy some time by adding fluid, until the weather warms up. Best case would be the master is going, I think.

Remove the rubber cover on the inspection port on the LH side of trans, use a flashlight, and see if you see any fresh fluid in there.

Check in after you check the fluid levels.

pull the rubber boot out of the master cyl. take a turkey baster and clear out all of the brake fluid in there. paper towels, and some brake clean, and clean the dirt and crap out of the inside of the master cyl. you will be surprised how much crap is in there. bleed the clutch with new brake fluid, don't forget to clean the rubber boot.hope fully the dirt diddn't go all the way through your system, and this works.

when this happend the fluid was still full in the master cylinder. I put some more into it to top it off. its like it wont get pressed down from the master to the slave and build up any pressure. It still had pressure when i tried to bleed it but now it wont build it up? I dont understand what the deal is

gunky dirt accumulates at the bottom of the master cyl. when you tried to bleed it, it stopped up the holes the fluid has to go through. if you clean this out, your master cyl will work again properly

Yeah, it sounds like the master cylinder is not pushing fluid.
Sincerely yours, Rod

I am going to go with a bad Master as well... Sounds like the fluid is not traveling.

Have fun bleeding the system

You did remove that rubber cup under the cap of the master cylinder before checking and adding brake fluid?

It's not as stupid of a question as it sounds either. If you don't know it is there then you could have over looked it.
