So it looks like I will have some time and it will be warm enough to drain my tranny on Sat. morning. It seems like it will be easy enough, Drain the pan, remove the pan, change the filter. Step two, Remove the rubber plug on the TQ and drain. Replace everything and fill with fluid.
My questions are.....
Can you guys tell me if I might run into any roadblocks or any other difficulties while I am working on this? I am an amatuer and I have only done this once many years ago, and I might have been drinking more then helping with the actual work.
What type of fluid would you guys recomend for an E4OD?
I remember using some type of liquid gasket compound, is this needed for the transmission pan? What would you guys recommend, if it is needed?
Feel free to contribute any other info or tips that you can come up with.
I'm an amateur at this, but I just changed my tranny fluid. The torque converter has a bolt to drain it- you have to bump the engine until it lines up (or crank it by hand) and it takes awhile to drain and has a lot of fluid in it. I have an oil extractor which runs a hose down the dipstick into the pain to drain the fluid- makes it a much less messy job- otherwise just drop one end of the pan and get as much out as you can before taking the pan off. For the gasket- re-use the rubber one or buy a rubber one instead of cork, don't use any sealant other than the gasket and don't over-torue the pan bolts or you'll deform the gasket and have a leak. As far as the filter goes- I agree with those who recommend getting one from Ford, the aftermarket ones have a shorter pick-up tube and so are known to fall out as they are friction fit only and not held up by the pan as well. After you clean the pan, make sure you replace the magnet! Your dipstick will list what type of fluid to use- usually it's Mercon, there are other options such as synthetic that others may have more info on (I used Castrol Dex/Merc). Don't overfill it when your done. Also, check the link below: FullSizeBronco.com - 78 - 96 Ford Bronco offroad club, forums, tech, installs
Thanks, for the link to FSB is very helpful with the pictures. I can't wait to get out and get to work this weekend. I will watch out for the rubber ring also, I never would have looked for it if you hadn't told me.
