Got a CEL on a 00 Excursion and the code alluded to the entire bank of glow plugs being out, but the truck starts and runs smooth even below freezing, it came back after resetting, any ideas?
You can ohm the glow plug wiring to see if you have any bad plugs, but if it starts fine in cold weather with no white smoke, then it sounds like you've got a bad GPCM for the entire drivers bank to be down at once. What exact codes did you get?
Ill have to check again I didn't write down the codes. So where is the GPCM, what does it do and how hard is it to replace,
I don't know if its a cali model, don't even know how to check
The CA models came with a GPCM instead of a GPR. All of the Ex's also came with a GPCM. Joe forgot this part and was trying to make sure you had one before saying that sounded like you're problem. The GPCM is a rectangular box over near the rear portion of the passenger side valve cover. It has 2 large plugs going to it. It sits just behind a round relay (AIH). One of the plugs has wires that goes to the drivers side, the other goes to the passenger side. You can start with unplugging the connectors and see if there is any corrosion on the pins, cleaning things up, and seeing if that helps.
If you swap the two connectors on the GPCM and the same codes for GPs 2-4-6-8 come back then you have a bad GPCM. I doubt you have 4 bad GPs or a connector or harness that is affecting all 4 GPs. A bad GPCM will show one whole back or the other bad.
Edit: If you swap them don't forget to swap the back.
good tip payson, I will give it a shot, the next question I have is do I have to replace it? The system seems to work fine....
It you are sure the GPCM is heating the 2-4-6-8 GPs there would be no reason to replace it but if you have trouble starting during the next cold spell you will know where to look.
Unless he has a vehicle inspection coming up. They typically won't pass an inspection with the CEL on.
I would never have thought about that. Since I moved to Gila Couty Arizona 8 years ago I have never had to go through one of those dreaded vehicle inspections.

From the time you mentioned that a whole bank of plugs had gone out, my first thought was GPCM.
All Excursions equipped with the 7.3 are California trucks, why Ford did that is beyond me, but who am I to question them...
It's on the passenger side of the engine and as F350-6 said, it has a Black and Green connector going to it: two plugs, two bolts, ten minutes, and you're back on the road. You can get the part off flea-bay for a reasonable price as I'm sure the dealer may want your first born.
