I got a letter from Ford last week describing a "possible problem for Super Duty trucks". My truck has this possible problem. There is a so called shimmy going over offset bumps on the highway with my 2006 F350. The letter describes it to a T. I have replaced the Rancho shocks with Bilsteins and the problem is lessened but still there. Ford's answer in the letter was to check tire pressure and slow down if it happens. It gives you that real cozy feeling. What is the real problem with these front ends and the fix? It obviously costs some money to fix and Ford is not stepping up to the plate to fix it. By the way, my SuperDuty only has 15K on it and it has had this problem for over a year. I hate to go to the dealer without all the info, because they have been done this road a zillion times and know how to deal with me. It will only end up costing me money unless I do my homework, I know you guys know the answers. Anybody got some insight into this problem? If this has been discussed before, I apologize for bringing it up again.
Thanks,
JWR
Got mine too, garbage. I had the suspension issue on my 05, they checked all my pressures which were good, retourque all my steering components, and replaced steering wheel. It went away. Haven't had on 08, YET
I got the letter too. Nice that they call it "shimmy" when everyone else calls it "Death Wobble" My 05 had it at 30k miles right before it went out of warranty - lucky for me. They replaced the steering stabilizer and one of the other peices that was badly worn from the wobble and it seems to be fixed. I haven't had the problem for over a year now, although I've only put about 7k miles on it since it was fixed. It is really spooky when it happens on highway speeds - I'd have to slow down to 40mph to get it to stop - I'm surprised someone hasn't lost control from it and gotten killed/killed someone. Anyway, I'm glad to have the letter so I have contact info for my wife's 08 Edge with the multiple PTU leaks - now there is a problem Ford doesn't seem to want to/be able to fix...
Have a '06 F250 CC I bought new. It developed the shimmy.....death wobble is more like it. It's not a joke. When it gets started it gets violent with the front end nearly jumping off the pavement and the only thing thats stops it slowing to nearly a stop. Mine developed it at around 30K miles. I took it in for diagnosis at about 37K. Just out of warranty of course. Dealer charged me $1,100 to fix it. Repairs worked as it no longer does it (47K now). I get the letter yesterday and call Ford about reimbursemnt for a known defect. Obviously they told me no. We're not done yet. I sent out a coupe complaint letters to a couple agencies. Please let me know if you guys are getting this fixed at no cost and are over the warrantied mileage. Thanks.
I got the letter and they might as well said We have no idea why this happens but if it does slow down.
I have an 05 with the towing and caper package, I forget wich one added the rear anti-sway but could that be why I do not get the death wobble? I guess I ma asking could that be one of the factors of why some people have and other do not
Mine has those options and I still had the death wobble, so I don't think that has anything to do with it - I would guess it is just that stabilizer in the front wearing out depending on use and causing the wobble. I know mine was used for heavy towing (farm machinery) and a lot of bad gravel road driving here in MT, so I wasn't too surprised, although the dealer had seen a lot of the issues and apparently fixed it right on the first try. I really wouldn't be too worried about it as you'll know if it happens, no guesswork there. If my truck was getting close to the warranty expiring, I think I'd definitely take it in and have it checked out just to be safe.
I just received my letter from Ford Corp. I'm with you all, this letter doesn't help us. This "death wobble" happen to me twice a few month ago. Ford know about this problem an they don't want to fix it after the warranty. They should just make it a Recall. I guess Ford is going to wait till someone gets hurt seriously before doing anything. Remember the tire recalls.
I know that GM is having problems, but if Ford wants to be the leading auto maker, they better start backing up their products. They should just take care of all their loyal customers.
They should just send out letters telling all their customers to go to their local dealer and get all the TSB fixed for free. This will satisfy all Ford customers and will make them more loyal to their company and products.
Also, They should be the first American Company to change their warranty to 6 years/100,000 miles. I mean, if they're advertising Ford Tough they should really back that up. Some people keep their ford vechicles about five years or more.
If anyone trades in their Ford vechicles less then 6 years, at least the second owner will still have some warranty and feel good about a Ford Product.
Well that's my opinion. Good luck to all on this problem.
Got my letter yesterday.
I only have 27,000 miles on my truck and it is doing the WOBBLE. It is real fun when your truck weights 12,000 lbs. I put on a new stabilizer over the winter and it helped a little but not much.
Did any one find out how much that kit from that WC motorsports (super duty fix) is ???
