When I bought my 2004 f250, it came without a spare tire carrier. Just the x-shaped mount underneath. I called the dealer, and they said it would cost $285 to install a new one. I went to fordpartsdiscounted.com and I found the following parts listed:
Bracket 11.40
Carrier assy 96.78
Guide 8.88
Lock assy 37.90
Spacer 25.75
Total: 180.71
Do I need all five components? Can I get the parts somewhere else for cheaper? Right now I'm leaning towards letting the dealer do it (I'm okay doing things, it just takes me longer).
How many hours would it take for someone who is not familiar with it to complete? Are there any other options? I'd rather not have it in the bed or cab. Thanks.
I would take a trip to the wrecking yard if it were me. I don't know what the bracket and spacer are in the list you put up, but I would just buy the carrier. The guide isn't necessary but might help keep grime out of the winch assembly. The lock assembly is optional. With no tire under there, you can put the winch assembly in about 10 minutes - 2 bolts and you're done.
I second Superduty4x4's reply. I got one from a pull it yourself yard. That way you get to see how it is installed. Be careful, some yards just cut them with a torch to get at the spare tire because they can't get the tire down any other way with a lock on the assembly. You want a pristine one. Make sure it is not siezed either.
i would'nt buy the lock. i borrowed a buddys lock key lowered my tire and used a screwdriver to pop the lock out. what i was left with is a hole that the jack tool under my hood fits perfectly in. it cranks down with no problem.
New guy here, I could've swore I registered some months ago but apparently not. Anyways.
I have my old spare tire winch and key. I took it off after fabbing dual locking spare tire carriers for the bed. If you want it PM me and we can work something out.
