I want to put stacks on my 1990 supercab f-150, but i don't know how to run them since i have twin gas tanks. Should i put them on the inside or outside of the box? How big? Mufflers? I just want them out of the mud so i don't clog them when mudding.
Most diesels with dual stacks just have a single hole cut in the bed and then a "Y" pipe at the front of the bed to get to duals. If you're wanting to run true duals all the way then you would probable have to run both pipes up through the passenger side and run the drivers side over. It would look much better in my opinion to have them inside the bed than on the outside. Probably use the same guidelines as posted in the plentiful dual exhaust posts (search). Also, for the actual stacks I would go with no bigger than 3", mufflers are up to you but space will be limited under the truck.

It has a 5.0L engine. would i have to wory about the heat of the pipes? could i run them on the out side of the box?
you could run them on the outside of the box, but they would most likely have to be routed underneath the truck frame which isn't exactly good for mudding. They will probably get fairly warm, especially if you run straight pipes, but you could always put chrome heat shields on them to give it the big-rig look .
ive always seen stacks on a gasser kind of poserish but then i thought about it and it seems like a pretty good ideal for a mud or deep water truck...like mine so i think ill do it one day
what style of box do you have id say it might look kinda cool tho have the stacks on the outside of a flareside box like run them up though the step but then like mentioned they would have to be run under the frame which would suck but for a styleside definitely run them up through the box
stacks are for kenworths and peterbuilts besides how are you gunna blow exhaust into those import cars if ur exhaust in way up in the air. just my 2cents

If you're blowing it up in the air you get more coverage Stacks are a hit or miss type thing tho, look good on some trucks (lifted 4x4s, duallies, crew-cabs, and any combinations of these), but on a fleetside F150 I dunno... I had two small stacks in my old Chev, but that was a stepside bed with big tires so it looked pretty decent even tho twas a gasser...
ahh i never thought about coverage haha most truckers like to bag on guys with stacks tho i hear them on the cb all the time ...seems to be the rage in my area these days every1 has stacks .i also find their not as loud as all the noise is directed up which means no more car alrams
Eh, my stack cost me like $15, a full exhaust behind the axle i way more than that, at this point I could care less what some trucker don't like about me having a stack. Of course mine is just one and only 3" diameter so it looks like it sorta belongs there, unlike them big 6" bling-blings that look like they came straight off a big rig... That said, I never had a trucker complain about my stack, they've complained about my driving many times, but once they realize I run on cruise at 60mph and understand that unlike them I can maintain that uphill too without messing up my fuel economy, we usually come to an agreement - on the downhill I move outta their way so they can pick up enough speed for the next uphill, then on the uphill as they lose speed I pass them still on cruise, I drove through most of Pennsylvania convoying with two of them like that and everyone was happy cause everyone knew exactly what the other two are doing at any moment... CB goes both way, ya know
The only gas half ton truck I have ever seen that looked good with stacks outside the bed was the Dodge "Little Red Express" and it was also a step side. It would have to be a stepside or flareside to run stacks outside the bed. If your truck is a fleetside then outside the bed would look bad. Personally I think stacks are also for big rigs. I don't even like the stacks on diesel pickups. If you run stacks you have to run 2 though. A single stack looks goofy. I also agree the the bigger stacks look like bling just like 20+ inch wheels do. It is all to large for the vehicle and just looks stupid.
The thing is is i'm trying to mud proof this truck a little and i always get mud in the exhaughst pipes. I was planning on running dual straights out the box,but i need to run them next to the roll cage. I was also planning on putting flapers on them.
haha its fine if ther 3" but 2 firends of mine put 8" on theirs looks dumb my opinion haha also its nice that you move over on the down hill my bro is a long haul trucker and i kno he gets pissy when he has to change lanes back and forth on the hills, i don't tend to get into arguements with guys who are over 40,000lbs lol southern10 flappers are the king s*** they sound awesome when their smacking around.
I would skip stacks on a gas motor. They are fine on diesels if thats what you want, but they are kind of stupid on a gas motor. Also, to keep your low-end power (which is already at a premium with the 302), You would need to keep the pipes relatively small, which would look even worse. Just my 2 cents, do whatever you want, it's your truck.
