I have not had a failure in my 2003 but I change the rearend lube and add the special additive every 30k miles. The symptom for me is a sensation that a front tire is rubbing against the wheel well when turning to the left and accelerating. It really does feel like it is coming from the front of the vehicle but it is coming from the rear end. Other than that no issues, never completely goes away but is minimized by the addition of the special additive.
I have an '05 E.B. 4x4 Expedition w/ 5.4 w/ 27,xxx miles on it, and haven't had any problems w/ it. I do have to agree w/ the others about the tires...they suck. Overall it's a great truck/suv.
tell me more about this posi trac clutch pack issue. what is it? i know what a posi trac is i would like to know what the issue with it is. what ere symptoms, noises, vibrations?
thanks
mike
The clutches bind up when you are making slow speed tight turns, like in a parking lot or pulling out onto a road from a stop. Sounds like a grinding noise, goes away as the the wheels straighten out. This will also happen as the fluid ages, so it may not always be a component failure / issue.
I have a 03 XLT with the 5.4 and it has been mostly problem free. The only thing I have done to it besides scheduled maintenance was replace the ac because it was leaking. I currently have 110,000 miles on it with no known problems. The thing I like most about the 03 is that it is the only year with the new body style and still has the 3rd seat in front giving much more leg room and of course holds an additional passenger. The brake dust problem is very simple to fix, get ceramic brake pads. They produce hardly any dust compared to the oem pads, and I've had mine for 70,000 miles with still over 50% remaining.
Im not getting notifications so first off, thanks to everyone that posted. We just picked up an 04 Eddie Bauer[69k miles].Loaded out with all options available, but yes,the horrid Cont.tires.They are new though so we will run them until time to change.I had to go a few rounds over 4 days to get the deal right, but it worked out.Its wedgewood blue/tan with tan interior.I have a small detailing business so our cars are always kept up.One of the first things I am going to have done is change the spark plugs and rear diff fluid.Ive got a good friend that knows Fords in and out.Ive had four Expys[3-98,s] current 99 EB.I really thought she would want another Burb but when she saw the folding 3rd seat she was sold.Again, thanks to all that replied
You may be in those Conti's for a while. As bad as they are, they last for ever. I finally got tired of waiting for them to wear out and changed them on my '04. They had 60k on them and still had a lot of tread left. I found the start of dry rot on one of them and used that excuse to ditch them. If you have the LSD make sure to add the friction modifier. Actually if you don't have the LSD there is probably no reason to bother with the fluid.
Whenever I get a new[used] vehicle,I always do a complete tune up.It gives me peace of mind.Im not worried about the tires. My wife has the kids most of the time in hers.As long as they are safe and wear even,Im good

It should be on the window sticker because it was an option, and there is also a code on a metal tag attached to the pumpkin which I believe will tell you the gearing and whether or not it is limited slip. I do not know the codes, so I can't help you decifer them. There are some threads on the site that talk about it though.
