I am putting a 10" sub in my 2006 f350. I saw a guy with 4- 10" short throw (Pioneer) subs behind the rear bench. He sacrificed the cargo space back there for the box. The subs were mounted low and fired against the back of the seat.
I am opting for a different approach. I figure if I am going to sacrifice something, it will be the console between the front seats. I will build a new box with the sub mounted so it fires facing down toward the floor. I figure if I extend the box length by three to four inches in the back and four or five inches in the front, I will achieve the necessary size. The speaker will be elevated three inches from the floor and there will be space on the floor for the air pressure to change.
The box will taper at the top so I can reapply the stock wood-grained lid and inside I will leave a two inch deep well for my junk. Extra cup holders in the back of the box along with two extra 12-volt receptacles will fill in the gap created by ford for not incorporating this originally (yes, there are the cup holders in the armrest, but they are not always easily accessed for passengers).
To eliminate the traditional “Plywood” look, I am going to wrap the whole thing in fiberglass, sand, and then paint.
So, can it be done? Yes at least on the 1999 – 2006 models.
Let me know if you need more details (speaker, amp, wires, etc.)

I think the OP is asking specifically about the factory option sub and adding it after the fact. Like what else would be needed, wiring harness, amp, etc. Wish I had the answer. Mine came with it. I can tell you it's not exactly out of this world and I am considering adding a second sub under the seat next to it. That being said, I would probably recommend going aftermarket.

I am not really a fan of lots of bass - my stock stereo is probably good enough for my tastes but would not mind bumping things up a bit with the factory unit if it worked - maybe find one used from somebody upgrading, etc who has a keener need for better sound than me. Thanks!
