newly acquired 2004 F250 Diesel. While ascending a medium hill suddenly screaching sound from engine bay, sensing loss of power and heavy smoke from exhaust. I am believing the Turbo is giving out? 59,000 miles. truck otherwise sounds fine. I think my Turbo might be giving up the ghost? This is not good since I have had the truck for five day's. any thoughts and experience please let me know. Will find out purchase date as this might be covered under warranty?
Have a look and feel at all the turbo rubber boot connections,from the turbo to intercooler back to the intake,there are 4 of them.I hope for you you find a tear.
Before you purchased the truck did it sit for any extended period of time? It is possible the vanes are sticking and/or rusted. Also your truck might still be under warranty. Might want to stop by a dealership w/ a knowledgeable diesel tech to see if it can be fixed while the warranty is still good.
In response to your message about my Turbo problem. The truck did sit for about 6 month's!! and perhaps you are correct, the vanes could be sticking. Now if they are, how do you un-stick them? I will contact the PO tomorrow and find out when the truck was purchased, hopefully it is still within the 5 year window and therefore under warranty. I am crossing my fingers on this one. I hope al works out, I got a good buy on the truck, only had to buy new tires + fully sanatize the interior by taking all seating out and giving it a good scrub + flooring. I will post findings tomorrow...

You might get lucky and be able to break it loose with a heavy foot. I would personally pull the turbo off and clean it. There is a link in the tech folder for this procedure.
Well, I looked at the delivery date and it was 12/04 so I just trotted the rig over to the nearest Ford Dealer and they are giving it a good look over, hopefully I will know tomorrow. I was told the turbo was taken out and that is as far as they got today. the warranty is $100 deductable and I hope ther areent any other parts that need replacing. Will give report tomorrow evening. Perhaps I should have just given it a good hard drive as stated by the previous thread, but then I want to be sure it is going to be OK. I tow Porsche tractors to events, shows, parades etc, and my biggest tractor weigh's 5500, with the trailer I am pulling 8000 lbs. I have been pulling the trailer wtih my 78 International Scout Traveler, it has a large engine but the 1/2 ton capacity was just not doing it!!! I have had the IH for 25 years.
Any interest in the Porsche air cooled Diesels, just ask, I currently own 6 of them.
Well, gents, my suspicions were correct, the turbo was bad on this engine and I was lucky that shards of metal from the vanes were not dispensed into the engine. As the warranty for the engine does not expire until December, the dealer/Ford will replace the Turbo for me at no charge. There was a $100 deductable fee otherwise all paid by Ford. The Service guy of course tried to up sell other items and and decided I would take care of them. Are these Turbo's prone to failure? if so what can I do as an owner to prevent untimely loss.
Glad to hear you were still under warranty. That $100 is pale in comparison to the few grand it would normally cost to do most major work.
Yes they are prone to failure if they sit for extended periods of time. Best way to keep it clean and running smooth is to drive it at least once or twice a week. You can also use a full synthetic oil to prevent coking. If you are not using synthetic then let the engine cool down after running it hard. This usually only takes about 1-4 minutes depending on how hard you were driving. A free flowing exhaust will help.
Going from an Ih Scout Traveler with a large engine to the Ford 6.0 is going to be a little challenging as I learn the ins and outs of owning a Turbo Diesel. tips like you are giving me really helps. Those of you who have had these trucks have learned like I am when you first bought yours. I will seriously consider the full synthetic oil if this will prevent further trips to the doctor. I will get my rig back tomorrow. I also have ordered new wheels and tires from the Tire Rack, they should arrive tomorrow as well.
Spend a few hours and read through the tech folder. Good to hear she's back on the road, and I'm glad you didn't take my advice. That could have ended badly
I just started having the same problems on saturday while towing through the Sierras. I just hope that my dealership is as willing to replace my turbo without questions seeing as how I have a 4" exhaust on it.
I also have a 2004 6.0. The turbo is sticking at 59314 miles and I am out of warranty as of last May. I only drove the truck when I needed a truck, I didn't use it as a car. I didn't know that by not driving my $37000 truck that major components would fail. I called FoMoCo and they said thanks for being a loyal ford customer, but tough luck. The code is P1000 and the dealership says $1700 plus the $250 for the plug in test. The truck drives fine most of the time, but sometimes when I have to accelerate it loses power and then won't go at all.
Well gents, As I found out with my turbo failure, I was lucky and caught it in time. If the vanes of the impeller gouge the aluminum body enough to send chardes of metal into the engine, the engine will be destroyed. I was told this by my service man @ the dealer. The cost of a new turbo is a lot of money!!! Apparently sitting som long periods of time is also not a good thing, start it a run it frequently.
I got my truck back yesterday and it feels and sounds better now and I was told the replacement turbo is a stronger unit.
I seem to have a simular problem. While driving 70 mph on the interstate my truck started loosing power. After a quick check of the guages all showed well as I pulled into the service lane. It kept running and would start but only idle, no engine speed up at the pedel. Once towed to thehouse I put the diagnostic test and it showed " turbo/supercharger boost pressure not detected" code # P2262 mechanical. I had to leave it home this morning, can anyone shed any light on my case. Will get started on the weekend. Thanks PS: first time forum person and not even sure if Iam in the right forum. toolmann
