What front end is this?

I bought a 1971 F-100 and I think the cab was switched onto another vehicle's frame.

My front axle has this code

D1TA - EC
603289-1
3:54

The balljoints appear to be bolted on my four cap bolts and a plate. Going by pictures of Broncos I think it might be a DANA 30.

Is it a DANA 30? It seems to be as big as a DANA 44, but, I can not find any pictures of ball joints like that except on DANA 30s.

Are there any Fords that came 1971 or after with a DANA 30 front, Ford 9 inch rear, with a 117 WB? It also has a 390/Dana 21/NP435(???). I just want to track down what the chassis is so I can order the right parts.

You have a dana 44 from a 71 f-100, 3.54 ratio, open carrier, assuming nothing has been changed. Dana 30's were in the bronco's not F-series.

Did the DANA 44 have what appears to be four bolts holding on the upper and lower balljoints? I can not find pictures of that anywhere.

Also, the truck has coils over its rear shocks. I have not seen that in any book either.

I want to make sure I have a F-100 chassis, not a Bronco or something else, before I order repair books and parts on-line.

The cab does not match the frame/chassis.

What set up did 4x4 65/66 trucks have?

Under the four cap bolts and plate, are there balljoints or is it a bearing of some sort?

I have tried to find some sort of picture showing a DANA 44 with this set up, four cap bolts where the UJ/PIN is, but, to no avail. The only picture of this type of set up I can find is a DANA 30.

Where can I find out what axle it is by tag #? It looks like the axle came with the frame, once I find out the axle I might be able to nail down the frame. I need/want to replace all the axle bushings once I know which axle it is.

65-66 ran an enclosed knuckle D-44 with what I call the king pin style ball joints, under the four bolts and plates are little tappered bearings and races, same as your 71 front. Your rear shocks are just aftermarket coilover shocks, they are not factory. Your front diff I de-coded in my Dana book, it is for the 71 F-100. Dana 30 also ran king pin style, but you do have the 44.

Thank you VERY much.

I just wanted to be sure before I started ordering replacement parts and repair manuals. I will ditch the coilovers and get normal shocks. If this is you

I decided to drain all the fluid, clean out the carrier, and put a new vent hose on. The old vent hose had a solid vent plug, as in all metal, no venting allowed. How strange is that? A hose going to something that does nothing.

Anyway, I was able to get these numbers off the side of the ring:
8/14/74
DANA 33844
B3(? might be 8) R34
46-18

Does this mean it has a 2:55 front end (46/18). Reason for asking, I spun the rear end/driveshaft a couple of times and I came up with almost 2.5 rotations instead of 3.5.

I got these numbers off the third member
C7AW-E 51
when I changed the fluid.

Unfortunately I forgot to count the teeth while I had it out. Now that it does not leak, I am not anxious to remove it again

The number is actually 46-13 which is 3.54. On the vent, that steel vent tube, presses into the housing, then there is a cast channel into the diff, it is small, but works, glad you checked it, they do get plugged with junk. The rear is the casting number for the 3rd member, that number does not tell me anything. When you spun the rear to check ratio, how did you do it?

Arg! Can't believe I missed a reply to my own question.

I tested it by putting the rear end up with both wheels off the ground. Positioning the valve stem at the top, then spinning the wheel and counting the driveshaft rotations.

I must have messed up somehow in the counting because I now have the 4x4 working and if the back and front were that mismatched (2:5 vs. 3.54) I imagine the results would be terrible even on a loose surface.

Those were the only numbers (c7aw-e 51) that I could find on the rear end, I even took a wire brush to things to try to find more numbers.

I still need to order king pins and bearings, now that I have the factory manual (CD-ROM) I think I am ready for a try.
