Questions

so i just bought a 460 out of a 78 lincoln and am about to put it in my 76 f100. the f100 was factory with a 390/c6. Its a 2wd truck, so i found that might be where the problems start lol, does anyone make a set of headers for a 2wd? and what transmission options do i have? also, im in need of pistons, so what would be the best for it? its not going to be driven daily so.

probably the best motor mounts are the factory ones. lots of these trucks came fromt he factory with the 460, so check out the local wrecking yards to get a set. L&L also makes motor mount conversion kits, but i think they are mostly for the 4x4, not sure if they would work in the 2wd.

i would think that most of the major header manufacturers should make headers for this application. check out hedman, hooker, sanderson to name a few.

as far as transmissions, you are limited to the C6 or factory 4spds for ease of installation. you can get adapter kits to mate a c4, but unless it is built up it won't last very long behind a 460. the C6 is probably one of the toughest factory autos out there so that would be my choice. the newer overdrives from the factory 460's require a stand alone computer to work properly which is pricy. i am not sure what is all involved in mating the newer 5spds to the older 460's so can't comment on that swap.

as far as pistons, what is your intended use of this truck? stock rebuild with no other power adders, then cast pistons would be a good choice. mild performance build (different cam, headers, new intake, etc) then the hyper pistons are pretty good as long as you don't abuse them or try adding nitros or superchargers. forged pistons are top of the line but probably overkill for a mild street engine.

try to get pistons that get your compression up to 9:1 ratio, 9.5:1 max. you probably have the D3 heads so they have 95cc chambers. pick pistons accordingly.

hope this helps a bit

First year for 460's with a manual transmission: 1983. All previous car/truck 460's came with C6's.

1973/79 F100/350's with 460's use the same engine mounting parts.

1) D3TZ6028A .. Right Engine Perch.

1) D3TZ6029A .. Left Engine Perch

1) D3TZ6030A .. Right Engine Bracket (fits between the engine block & the insulator).

1) D3TZ6031A .. Left Engine Bracket (see above).

2) D3TZ6038A .. Right/Left Insulator (rubber motor mount)

1) D3TZ6A023A .. Rear Engine Mounting Bracket (aka crossmember, which bolts in).

1) D3TZ6068A .. Rear Engine Insulator.

NOTE: These 460 parts are NOT the same as Econolines used.

Econoline engine mounting parts will not work in F100/350's.

no. the 460 and the 390 used different bellhousing patterns. you will have to get a c6 from either a 429/460 or a 351m/400 as they shared the same pattern. the 390 c6 will not fit the 460.

if your a good welder you can fab up your own motor mounts for alot less then buyin some. heres the headers Dynomax 85050 - Dynomax Blackjack Headers you will also need a c6 from a 351m/400,429,460 to fit and a flexplate for a 429/460
