GAH! need some help guys!

1990 F-350 4x4 7.3 E4OD

Alright Gents... My truck starts fine runs awesome but when im running down the road and if I let off the pedal suddenly to apply for brake or what not the truck will stall out.... the rpms just fall as they would normally but do not stop at the usual idle rmp... then when i go to recrank it it turns over a couple times then starts...

which is unlike the truck even on cold days the damn thing starts right up.

I have no idea what the problem is.. i thought i had an air leak some where and was suckin air but to no avail i could not find it...
any ideas would be a god send Thanks in advance

Sticky governor in the injector pump. Quite common and not a biggie to fix.

You are probably not running a fuel lubrication suppliment. I don't either but this is one of the risks that comes with that.

There are different additives you can use in a case like this. Diesel kleen/power service is one of them, but I used some cheap automatic transmission fluid.

If you want to can remove the fuel filter, drain it and fill it with ATF but its really not needed to go through that trouble. I just dumped about 1L of ATF in the fuel tank and after about 2 hours of running the problem was completely cured (over a year ago now).

Think if it like cough syrup for diesels.

In the usa DO NOT put ATF in your fuel tank... If you get caught, it'll cost you.

ATF is red, They see it as off road fuel and the fines are hefty not to mention the Tax evasion issues!

Put it in the filter 50/50 mix, Not in the tank.

Or better yet use the proper Fuel Lubricant Additive and not have to worry about it.

Is that the first time you have used any aditive/cleaner? it may have broken loose all the stuff that collects on the inside of the fule lines and that may now be gumming up your IP. If it was the first time I would change the filter and fill the new filter with ATF or diesel kleen befor putting it on and see if that cures it.

LOL, it ends up in the tank anyway. Fuel return lines, remember? The fuel system in these trucks will recirculate the fuel about 5 times relative to the engine actually burning it all up, so most of the ATF you put in the filter will end up in the tank anyway.

Seriously, there are exemptions to what you can put in your tank even in the states but you are allowed to use fuel supplements that are not taxed as long as the content does not exeed a fixed % of the fuel you burn. Color alone might be enough to get you a ticket (which I doubt), but you can contest that in court as is the right of every citizen. Unless they send a fuel sample off to a lab for testing to prove that it is indeed off road diesel die, its not enough to convict. Stronger cases then that get thrown out of court all the time.

All that assumes that the law has nothing better to do than stop vehicles at random and look in their fuel tanks. Diesel shops have been doing the ATF trick long before my time.

I wouldn't worry about it, but if you want you can try an off the shelf diesel fuel supplement instead. From personal experience, ATF works the best and others online here have found that as well when it comes to a sticky governor.

The reason I do a 50/50 mix is I feel ATF doesn't combust as well and feel it's to hard on the motor. I always do it with a hot motor as well.

Just a personal preference though.

Just the other day I did a 100% filter of Seafoam and did not feel it was hard on the motor, it ran/sounded just like normal.

It is up to you, to prove, that it is NOT off road fuel.

I understand the return system, That is another reason I do a 50/50 mix with ATF.

Personally I don't like the risk, I have enough troubles without introducing controllable risk.

That is why I also recently tried Seafoam, I have used ATF for many many years and believe in it's use.

I'm pretty sure if your going to be charged with tax evasion (which is a serious charge) you can demand a jury trial. In that case the burden of proof is on the government. (actually it ALWAYS is but that doesn't stop people from getting screwed by the judicial system.)
If you've been watching the news Helio Castroneves was charged aith tax evasion, the gov't didn't prove its case to the satisfaction of the jury and he was found not guilty.

It's probably better to avoid the whole thing in the first place though since it will most likely cost you plenty to fight "the man".

Color is exactly what gets you the ticket.

The tube they use has a slight green tint, regular highway makes it look very light in color.

Even a small amount of red makes the tube appear dark.

Thinl about a trip to court.

Day missed from work, probably a lawyer also involved.

So this is still a costly affair even if the charges are dropped.
The red color should not be there, so the burden of proof will be on your shoulders.

Is it worth the risk?
Not in my book.
