99 expy better mpg

im still new here so please forgive me if i sound like a moron , ive got a 99 expy 4.6liter 4x4 , from what i understand im getting crazy good mpg from what im being told ( 16-17mpg on freeway ) and around 13 city , my question is there any way i can get a lil more out of it ? i love my truck to death and i jus cant drive it like i want , 99% of my driving is done on the freeway and i drive 60+ miles per day, im just tired of driving my olds alero around lol , so far heres what ive done , exhaust , plugs , wires , air filter , doing coils and fuel filter this weekend , anything else i can do to her for better mpg ? maybe a programer or something ? , o yea im running stock size tires 265-70-17s and real soon my truck will be a full 2wd truck so ill have way less weight on her , ive already removed the trailor hitch also

17/13 MPG is on the high side of normal. Any expectations of increasing it further will be met with disappointment.

alloro is pretty much right. In a big SUV such as the Expy, be happy with the 17 mpg. This isn't a hybrid Civic. Everything in your post: "exhaust , plugs , wires , air filter , doing coils and fuel filter" may help you gain a small increase but your next step, if you are serious, is to start gutting the interior. If you are concerned about fuel, the Olds is the way to go. I'd like to drive my Expy everyday, but I can't. I do 50 miles a day to school and I drive a Protege with a 1.6L in it. I may not like it, but it's economical. Anyway, I did a tune up on my 97 w/ 5.4L and I went from 12/12.5 mpg city to 14 (not instantly; took time for CPU to recalibrate). You might see a slight increase but I doubt it.

Most of the time the cost of the upgrade will take many, many years of gas savings to make the investment worthwhile. It also depends on the number of miles driven in a year. If an upgrade costs $500 and saves you $100 in gas per year, that 5 years before you break even. If you get rid of the vehicle in 4 years, then you've spent $500 to save $400 and actually lost money and would've been better off leaving well enough alone. Just food for thought!

Your driving habits have a great influence on your MPG. Most of your fuel economy gains will be in your right foot. Anticipate stops and coast to the stop. Gradually increase your speed, no jack rabbit stuff. Draft on big trucks safely. I recently made a trip from Sacramento, CA to Ft. Worth, TX and got 20 MPG over 1800 miles in my 99 with a 5.4. My average over about 5000 miles this year, city and Highway is 16 MPG.

Do your BEST.

He's not much of a friend if he won't share his "secret", or he just doesn't know why and he's pretending he does. The 3.73 gears will help around town with acceleration, but it will reduce your MPG because your engine will turn more revs per mile. Maybe he's not running stock tires and he's showing more miles on the odometer than he's actually traveling.

I have a '98 with 5.4 the window sticker said it would get 21mpg on the highway, and it does you just have to drive 55mph to get it.
