if its a tilt column it i dont think it will work unless you swap wiring harnesses,,could be wrong though,,and im assuming you meant 390 instead of a 398?

these parts are fairly easy to remove, take them and worry if they fit later. the steering column i bet fits, alternator should fit, air filter may or may not.i think your going to be safe with these parts fitting. if there free or cheap go get them.

even if the column wiring isnt the same, most trucks this old are due for a replacement anyway.

I agree, take the parts if time is the problem, most old ford alts mount the same. I'm not sure about the steering column, and I would use an aftermarket air filter.

It may look the same, but in the case of the steering column, it's not the same.

1973/77 steering columns are 1973/77 only.

The steering wheel and horn pad are 1971/77 only.

The turn signal switch is 1973/77 only, as is the: shift tube, shift lever, shift collar, upper flange, bearings, mast jacket, steering shaft, steering coupler (rag joint).

1973/77's did not have a tilt wheel.

The air cleaner will fit, so will the alternator, but the brackets are different.

What's wrong with your steering column? It might be something simple.

well first of all it was made for an automatic. second it moves around, when you grab the steering wheel to drive it moves everywhere which makes it impossible to steer.

(sigh) What did I type in post #9?

Anything will fit if you make the necessary modifications.

You cannot remove a steering column from a 1967/72 and install it in a 1973/77 and expect it will bolt right up, and you cannot take a steering column from a 1973/77 and install it in a 1978/79 for the same reason.

And...if a 1967/69 F100/250 has P/S, the column will NOT work in a 1970/72.

I was a Ford partsman for 35 years, I have the parts catalogs. I'm typing facts, not heresay, rumor...or I read it somewhere.

Look at the bottom of the steering column under the hood at the steering coupler aka rag joint that connects the column to the steering gearbox.

If the rubber has torn, or the bolts have sheared off...there's the cause of your wandering steering.

You can buy a rag joint repair kit at a parts store for about 10 bucks.

btw: The rag joint from a 1973/77 WILL NOT FIT a 1978/79.
