My tailgate rattles over bumps, down the road etc. It's coming from the hinges. I can push on the bottom of the gate and there is a 1/4" movement/banging noise. I just didn't want to buy new hinges if this is normal operation. Thanks.
I am not sure I understand what you mean when you say the play is in the hinges at the bottom, but to stop tailgate shifting and movement you need to put bushings inside the actual hinge part of the tailgate where the side pieces on the bed protrude into the tailgate itself. I have teflon (sp?) bushings that fit the hole. They are kind of hard to hold in place when you put the tailgate back on, but they do work and stop the side to side movement of the tailgate, which is causing the rattling. The hinges themselves are supposed to hang freely inside the sides of the tailgate when it is closed also, but I would imagine that over the years, with lots of use, the hing point pins could wear, allowing them to rattle. Then, new hinges would be in order . Plus, the tailgate mechanism is all metal on metal, so some sound/rattle is unavoidable. Good luck!
Dak
I should have been more descriptive. The gap is between the tailgate and hinge-as if the hinge has a diameter of 1.5" and the tailgate's opening is 1.75" or larger. No movement side to side, just front to back.

The parts catalog does not show a separate bushings for the hinges.
The hinges could be similar to the door strikers, where the sleeve aka bushing is only furnished with the striker itself.
There are 4 rubber stops, two round at the top, two odd shaped a bit lower. These are ok and are intact. The movement is strictly at the bottom.
Right, the "odd shaped" lower ones help keep the metal supports from banging inside the gate with it closed.
It could be that the "socket" in the gate where the hinges "insert" in the gate, are wallowed out, or worn as well as the hinges. My 1972 suffered from that, had to fabricate and weld a new piece in place.
EDIT, or mismatched parts like numberdummy mentions above.
