I have a c6 that i am stump with. The shift lever on the transmission i can click through the gears, but when i put it in a gear at the transmission it is in a nuetral postion. it does this in all gears. If i move it between gear postions it works, in all gears. This is driving me nuts, in the cab to find gears. You have to move shifter lever very slow to get gear you want. Any help would be great.
It sounds like the linkage needs adjustment. Look at where the column comes through the firewall (engine side) and you will see a vertical linkage about 12 or inches long. Follow this down to where it attaches to the rest of the linkage. You will see it is slotted to allow adjustment. Loosen the nut to adjust. Manually click the transmission in DRIVE (click all the way rearward and then back forward 2 detents). Then put the column in DRIVE. Tighten the nut back up.
snowman I tried that, It did not seem to work. So a maually at transmission put In drive.
Had someone start truck it did not move like it was in a neutral spot. With truck running slowly moved the shift lever at tranny then it went it drive. It seems like it goes into gears between each click on tranny
At first I thought you meant it went into gear inbetween detents on the shifter (at column). To confirm, it only seems to go into gear when you manually click between detents on the transmission. Correct? If that is the case then I think you might have a more serious problem going on inside the trans. Hopefully some of the more experienced can offer suggestions.
You can have slop in the mount that holds the crank that changes up and down movement of the shift lever to fore and back movement for the transmission. If so tighten the bolts. You can have loose ***** or nuts on one of the heim joints in any of the shift levers. Tighten nut or replace the heim joint (the ball with a threaded stick on it). If these are fine, you can have a loose nut inside the transmission pan on the lever that moves the slide back and forth in the valve body. Usually if the transmission lever itself is sloppy, the seal is bad too and is leaking where the shaft goes through the transmission wall.
check the nut inside that holds the actuator against the detent , in other trans I have seen them loosen letting the arm to get cocked and would eventually not going into gear at all and being cocked on the stud wears it out meaning more expense to fix later
is the nut inside the tranny. i am not that fimliar with transmissions. I will check this out this weekend, I have to go to Ohio the next few days. Thanks
Yeah, check all the shifter linkage stuff before you check the nut on the transmission shaft. If the shifter shaft on the transmission wiggles back and forth or goes in and out, the nut is loose in side the pan. To fix this, you have to drain the transmission, take the pan off, tighten the nut, make sure it is engaged with the slot in the valve right, then put a new gasket on the pan and fill it back up. To drain the pan, pros use a plastic garbage can lid with holes punched in the middle, to catch all the fluid and make it drain in a 5 gallon bucket. Make sure pan and edge of transmission is clean before doing this, don't want to introduce any dirt in transmission. Make sure truck is on railroad ties or jackstands before crawing under while it is up. Trucks, you maynot have to jack up, safer.
