I believe I ordered a cupholder from an 2002 model year truck for my old '99.5 truck with the stupid cupthrowers. IIRC, you cannot swap the faceplates, they have plastic-looking rivets on them that can't be replaced without breaking the whole deal. You need to match the paint.
I switched mine on my old 2000, got mine off of ebay and the faceplate was black and I had the gray interior. The older style had two very small allen or star head screws, I can't remember which, that held the faceplate on. I figured that the new one would too, but it didn't. So, I took the faceplate off of the newer style holder and held the gray faceplate up to it and drilled a hole on each side into the body of the cup holder. I put the screws back in and put some super glue on them just to make sure they would hold. It was holding up fine whenever I traded it on the truck I have now.
EDIT: I also had to grind off a couple of tabs on the back of the faceplate to get it to sit flush.
Glad to see other folks concerned with these *serious* issues!
I was thinking of getting some thin rubber and cutting the same shap as the old floppy foam bits, and swapping them in. I bet it would work. But his looks like a much nicer unit.
