hey everyone I have a 77 250 with a 460 so far I have a 675cfm Holley carb with headers and exhaust on the way, I know in the latter years of the 460 they put a milder cam in to pass emissions, I'm beefing up the motor now and need to know what the best cam to put in it is going to be, anyone have any ideas? thanks for any info.
You need to decide what you are going to all do to the motor and then call comp cams or another cam company and they will recommend the best cam for your application.
comp was cool about helping me on my cam. you need to know compression, vehicle weight, gearing, carburator, intended use, transmission, and i think thats it.
I have had good luck with using a double roller timing chain and just installing it with the cam straight up. as long as the cam is in good shape it usually wakes them up, good towing power.
Like I said call comp cams. I build a lot of drag motors running from the 9's to the 12's and I look through comp's book and decide which one I think would be best and then call them and ask them for their opinion. They are extremely helpful and will get you set up right the first time. If you want to run 12's you will need a pretty strong motor and a decent stall convertor to get that truck moving. You are going to need a complete kit from comp. Cheapest way to go. Kit has cam, lifters, double roller timing chain, springs, keepers, seals. Good luck
If you are making this a drag truck I would go with a custom cam and the right valvetrain parts to match it. Talk to Jay @ Camshaft Innovations. He'll get you what you need.
