About 2 months ago my 2004 F-150 truck started having tappet noise on idle. I thought nothing of it. Two weeks ago, I changed the oil and filter at 46000 miles and the emission light came on. I paid a Ford dealer $145.00 to troubleshoot it and they came up with:"You need a new alternator for $565". I then took it to a very reliable and honest mechanic and after 12 hours, told me the driver side cam phaser was not operating and the oil galleries were gunked up. To replace BOTH phasers, flush the oil system, replace the spark plugs--$2300.00 including $120 troubleshooting. I get the truck, guaranteed 1yr., in 2 days.
I know its kinda technical, but basically the Powertrain Control Module opens a solenoid that lets oil flow into the cam phasers, which are located on the end of the camshafts (like cam gears). The oil limits how much the cams are retarded or advanced. Its an effective way to change cam timing to reduce emmissions, increase gas mileage and engine power.
I've read a ton of articles regarding the phasers. What I can't seem to find is if there have been any engine failures (blown) due to phasers? Do the noisy phasers "fail" at some point?
My '04 5.4 with 134,000 has had the noise for over 100,000 miles. I've used Mobil 1 5W-20 from day one...

I use nothing but motorcraft oil 5w20 but i have not seen anyone blow their motor due to cam phasers but i lost a lot of gas mileage. When it started happening i was getting 19mpg and when it got the worst i was getting 12mpg and about 3 tanks after that im up to about 17mpg so far
