transfer case lube

'90 F250HD 4x
All my guides and owners manuals refer to the proper "Ford Product" type lube to use in my transfer case. Can anybody tell me in plain English what type of oil/lube to use? For example, I'd like to use a Valvoline product... what weight, etc? Living in southern california as far as climate is concerned... Thanks...

NAPA oils (and I think Carquest too) are made by Valvoline, plus they cost much less. I think that's what is in my dad's M5OD. NAPA Mercon ATF.

It actually just calls for Ford Mercon ATF. I flushed and filled mine with Mobil1 Synthetic ATF - I figured that if the fluid's going to be in there for a while, I might as well put the good stuff in.
