I have heard they are not to hard to rebuild or expensive but I have never done it. I just went to Autozone and spent $150 for a rebuilt one with a lifetime warrenty. Borrowed there pitman arm puller while I was there and had her done in less then an hour. soak the bolts for a few days before hand with some pb blaster or equivalent. hardest thing is aligning the steering shaft splines with the gear box splines. I center the steering wheel before removing the old box (straight ahead) then put the pitman arm on the new box, rotate it both ways marking where it stops then center the arm between the marks and put it together. there is a flat spot on the splines so it will only go together one way unless you get it 360 degrees out which may screw up your turn signal turn off in the colum. peice of cake!
oh,...when done with the job jack the front of the truck up put her on some stands, start it up and turn it stop to stop a bunch of times to bleed out any air in the lines (check for leaks too). check the ps fluid level and do it all over again if needed. the fluid will be super foamy so recheck it in a few days once all the air is out of it. When I did mine I replaced both lines and the pump just so I knew it was all new and there would be no contaimanated fluid....but I'm **** that way. Take care
On all of my trucks, past and present, I use synthetic Mercon ATF in the power steering system and an inline transmission filter in the return line. I've only ever had to rebuild one of my own steering boxes and I swore that would be the last one. We got something like three feet of snow that night and I didn't have a garage at that time.
I flush my power steering and change the filter about once a year these days too. I haven't bought a "new" truck in a long time but I always adjust out the steering box when I get a new used one. I've never had to do it again after the first time.
Ok I went to a couple places (Nape, advanced) and they have three steering boxes. All start wil SPA-*** there are like 6 application numbers. THey are all re-man's and look identical in the pics. I also noticed that my pully on the pump is wobbling around and eating up the serpentine as well So i'll pick up one of those and new lines as well.
waht did you guys (who replaced it) get for the application#?
Napa part numbers on their website: Box nsp 88278067 $161.00 + $88.90 core. Pulley nps 73025 $17.99. Always cross reference to a 96 truck. The 97 light duty always hoses up most parts folks. Don't know why the pulley is nps and the rest of the parts listed are nsp. Could be a typo.
