Hi, I am new to this so any advice would be helpful on where to look for info.
I have a 97 Ford Windstar with new 3.8 splitport - can this engine go into my 99 Ranger 4.0 (my head gasket is gone).
What are the challenges? Will tranny mount or is this not possible?
Thanks
It is an engine that is designed to be mounted transversly (spelling?). There is no way that it would ever be worth it to put that motor into your ranger. You would be miles ahead just doing head gaskets on your 4.0. That or replacing it with another 4.0L. Your talking replacing PCM's, wiring harnesses, making custom mounts for everything, making a transmission adapter, etc.
Then what would you be left with at the end of a day?
A perfectly good 99 ranger with a windstar motor in it.
If you want to do it just for the fun of doing it I would at least go with a 5.0L or something!
In summary,
It would not be a practical swap, unless given many hours and many dollars.
3.8 may be installed not transversly only! RWD applications: Mustang, Thunderbird... but with T5 ore AOD. So a lot of work swapping trannies, engine ECU's wiring harness.....
I have Taurus 3.8 and i had to change leaking gaskets last year... 4.0 is more reliable! and it is much easier to change gaskets with engine in truck then to swap engine and tranny
I'd like to vote for 5.0 V8 ore Triton swap, for Diesel Swap (Duratorq, Perkins, Pegeot, Cummins projects I saw).... but for Essex 3.8... This is engine for cars
