Which axle did you try to purchase? I have found that under sever abuse the ears on the shafts tend to be the weak point and thay start to lose their form. The hole in the ear becomes loose, and then the failure is right around the corner.

I was curious about your sepection, because I have been strongly considering a set of Longfields. I have a set at the shop (for a customers chevy) and these monsters are incredible. 300M material is the ultimate in strength, and Bobby stands behind his stuff.
The 2 grand might seem like a ton of cash, but consider the construction and the fact that the "modular" design means that the small parts are replaceable. Break an outer on a conventional u-joint axle, and the ears become deformed, thus leaving you with a pile of Chro-mo paper weights.
Longfields will allow you to replace just the parts that are broken, if you can break them.
We have been running the snot out of a set for a couple of years now, and love them. They are smooth as butter at full lock and do not bind up like a conventional u-joint.
The bells seem to do a decent job of keeping water out, and the grease lasts a while.

I am a big fan of the Longfield product:

so am i. my Dad is running a set of his u-joints in his EB D44 with 38.5 boggers, he has twisted shafts but the ujoints are holding up great..

My next big purchase for my rig will be a set of those Longfield CVs for my D60. i have some yukon 4340 35 spline outers and have broke one so far.. and that was with the 42s... had to run drive flanges because the warn hubs didn't last long at all..

For those of you that remember, I too run Yukon shafts, and I too have busted them. Heak I broke an inner and an outer with 39.5" Boggers. Dumb luck maybe, but this goes to show that you can spend a little extra money in the beginning, and go right by the chro-mo shafts. If you intend to run the vehicle hard, you might get by with chro-mo shafts and then again, you might not. For that little bit of extra money, you can have some peace of mind, and call Bobby.

Used axles are hard to sell, and dont bring too much money. Consider the investment of the chro mo shafts, and then look at what it costs to do it twice.
This makes the Longfields a bargain.
