Avoiding Chicago

We're driving from Minnesota to Ohio in a couple of weeks, and I want to avoid Chicago.

Current plan is to go down 39/55 and pickup I80 just west of Joliet.

Anybody have any better options?

Thanks,

Good idea to avoid the potholes, traffic, drunks and thieves. 39 is the way to go, mean crosswinds; use care if you're pulling anything

What part of MN to what part of OH ?
Run the trip via the UP of MI on mapquest or whatever map program you use.
(Or just let me know & I'll run a couple ways for you)
A few extra miles going through MI will be quicker & MUCH more enjoyable then accross I-80 in IL.
I just got back to SE MI from WA. going that way & don't regret a mile of it.

I have gone the long way around michigan and it was cool.

Another idea is to take the ferry across lake mi
(its kind of expensive, but very very cool)

Thanks for the info.

We're going from the twin cities to Montpelier.

I have gone the UP route before, and it was enjoyable. Hoswever, it took a lot longer -- at least the way I did it. I'll look again.

Thanks again,

Goin thru the up would take a long time, 39 to 80s the best way to avoid the toll road and the city. 39 is good for making good time, you can really cruise its usually pretty deserted but watch out for the winds!

39 Always seem to have more traffic on it (between 20 and 88) then my whole route down to quincy. Still no where near the traffic that 90/94 bring

after google mapping it, you might actually save some time by taking the ferry....

There is also a ferry that goes from Manitowoc,WI to Ludington,MI. The web site is S.S. Badger: Big Ship, More Fun! Just another option.
