Friday afternoon I am leaving with a friend to drive to Ohio from here(Vegas). He is from Ohio and we are taking his BMW back so he can sell it and picking up his Ford Taurus. He is also going to visit is father who is ill. It is supposed to be a 32 hour straight drive, so I am going so we can switch drivers here and there. He told me that I have to try this stuff called Skyline Chilie, it is supposed to have noodles in it or something. Anyone heard of this? Is it worth trying? Also he wants me to try Waffle House and White Castle. We don't get those out West. We are going to Canton, how should I dress? Sounds to me like I need some serious layers of coats! Keep in mind I have lived in Vegas all my life so I can not stand the cold!
Ok, right now ITS COLD!!!!! Many layers when you get here.. It's forcasted to be in the mid 30s to mid 40s this week around columbus, so in canton it wil be a little cooler. Ever heard of Steak and Shake? They're chili platters are about the same as SkyLine chili. White Castle has the best food ever....... Waffle house is OK... I'd go somewhere like IHOP, or Denny's.
Back in the early 70's there was another chili place in Cinci VERY similar to Skyline, but I can't remember the name. Cincinnati style chili is unique, not only in the fact it is served with spaghetti type noodles, but in the ingredients and how the burger is cooked. I just watched a PBS cooking show that attempted to recreate Cinci style Chili. Burger for the chili was boiled for a few minutes before adding other ingredients!
Also, is Izzy Kadetts(sp) still in business? If so, you absolutely have to go there. The atmosphere along with the food (kosher deli) is fantastic! I think I might just do a search on his place right now!!! When I lived there he didn't have a price list or menu's, just a board on the back wall. When you got ready to leave, he just asked you what you ate. Business types ALWAYS paid a higher price than blue collars. He and his wife had a running yelling rant going on between them, and the wait staff would give you a very hard time while they waited on you. One time my dad made a comment about not liking Cincinnati type chili, and the waiter chewed him. All in jest of course. A friend of my moms was asked as she paid her bill if she enjoyed her meal, and when she said it was "Just OK", Izzy told her he didn't want to see her back ever! Kind of like the Soup **** in Seinfeld, only not so serious.
on edit: just remembered , I think the other place was called 5 Star, or something similar. Cinci people chime in?
Im from Cincinnati, I think your refering to Gold star, im my own opinion skyline is watered down, I always eat Gold Star its a cincinnati Chili, I dont know if they have them everywhere but around Cincy there everywhere, like White castle which is also good, We also have Ihop now its suppost to be like a Bob evans and Perkins, all places are great to eat. Yes right now its kinda cold, weather men are saying probably for the nest 5 to 10 days its going to be very cold.
Do you know the route your taking though Ohio if so I can tell you where you would want to stop if you have time.
I love Cincinatti style chili. We live in Eastern PA and order cans of Skyline Chili to make our own at home.
Gotta get the 5 way! Its got evertying in it!
And you hate the cold...... Bring a coat. Just remember to slow down, the snow and the Ohio State Highway Patrol will give you a good greeting to Ohio.
To tell you the truth, I have no idea what Interstates we are taking. I know that when we leave Vegas we are going South to try to limit our driving in the snow. We will go through AZ, NM, TX, and start heading North through OK. It sound like I am going to have to try the Skyline. I will remeber #5. I also have a friend in Lancaster, we will stoping by there on the way home. Ya, from what I understand, I am going to have to bring a thick coat! To tell you the truth, I am the one who wants to try White Castle just because I never have. My buddy told me that it is and greasy but I will make him stop.
Can't comment on the chili. White Castle is like no other & worth trying.
I'd never go into another awful House again If I had any choose. I'll go hungry first.
Hey all these guy's here are fibbin to you its really about 10 below with a wind chill of 40 below, and we are getting about 6 feet of snow this week, if you don't like the cold then you are in for a treat. all the food here is rotten,
and and we all are skinney as a rail be cause the food is so bad......the roads are so bumpy that you will need to stop to tighten the lug nuts every 10 miles.Gas is about $20. a gal. and we don't have any farm fed gals to look at or even to take with you. they all look like cows.
Oh by the way we in the O.C chapter don't want to meet up with you when you get here so don't even think about letting us know when you are going to arrive, so don't even think about it.
Now that ive got you expectin the worst of the worst.
You'll have a great time when your buddy and you arrive
Be carefull & Have a safe drive and if you need anything pm me.
On edit: I just got back from the land of the one armed bandits, 2 weeks ago, had a great time there, and even brought back enough to pay about a month worth of my light bill.
