I have an '87 F-250 HD 4X4 with the 6.9L Diesel. At 35-40 MPH their is a front vibration when the manual hubs are locked. The u-joints seem fine and you can run with the transfer case engaged with no vibration if the hubs are open. I out of answers and would really appreciate your help. Thank you in advance and have a great holiday.
i have an 88 with a similar problem. if hubs are turned it vibes above 35 mph. all u joints seem fine. if i engage the transfer case it vibes a little less. i was going to take off the front drive shaft and try it with the hubs engaged. i am thinking it may be in the front drive shaft or transfer case.
The bearing holding the driveshaft in the pumpkin could be going bad or that axle could be wearing.
With the hubs not locked in and transfer case in 4x4 it is possible for one axle not to be turning, try locking in one hub at a time and maybe you can isolate which side is giving you problems.
Locking only one hub might still spin the other. Put a piece of string, a single strand of baling wire, or just a stick thru the knuckle u-joint you want to hold still - that way, if it binds, it'll just break the string, wire, or stick and not hurt anything.
