This truck has been my baby for many years. It has 270,000 mile and due a engine rebuild. I will be pulling trailers alot but also want a good street truck. Any ideas on a mild cam upgrade that will work with the stock mechanical and electrical equipment.
conanski and some others can probably give the best cam advice but to take advantage of a cam upgrade youll need to add some headers and a full exhaust.
Longtube headers and 1.7 rockers would be a good upgrade on that motor, use small tube headers and keep the exhaust at a max 2.5" single, smaller if duals. Also swap in a minimum 4.10 gears and possibly more if the tires are significantly larger than stock.
what kind of difference would one feel with 4.10 gears and 31" tires? im assuming my truck has the 3.55's in it
I have 4.11 and 31's but it's a 4.9L. 5.0's respond to lower gears much better than 4.9's. I think you would LOVE the 4.10 gear with 31's. I bet it would provide you with good power without robbing you of too much fuel. The 302 lives above 2,000 rpm. If you don't care too much about fuel you could even go to 4.56 (not that there's much difference).
I'm assuming you mean the 302 truck in your sig? It'll accelerate faster and generally feel much stronger, more mechanical advantage.
im not sure yet if im going to swap out the 302 in my truck for a 351 or buy another truck that already has a 351 or maybe even just a different truck with a 302 but not having 4x4 really sucks come winter time around here. but either way i was considering a 4.10 gear swap since thats what the lightnings came with stock.
Damn.. that's an unusual combo, could probably pull a house down though. If we were close I'd trade you a 3.55 axle...
+10000!
What's up Conanski!?
Unusual? How come? It pulls okay but I rarely get to pull with it. My truck pulled out a stuck 4-door Super Duty Power Diesel attached to a 33' Camper Trailer. The guy wasn't sunk in the mud but he couldn't gain traction. My dad jumped in my truck and put it in 1st. Didn't even spin a tire with the open diff! I was impressed.
I like my 4.11 well enough, it just sucks on the highway. You know what was fun is when I had OE height tires with the 4.11.. My truck was the fastest thing in the world to 30 mph.
If you want 4.10's Conaskski why don't you hit the local junkyard??? Look for some older F-250's!
i was kind of curious how hard the gear swap is on a ford 8.8. ive never done one but would really like some 4.10s to go along with a modded 351. id like to swap the gears myself if possible

I wouldn't do a gear swap by myself. My dad did it, I just watched him and gave him a hand as needed. For you DIY guys that know your stuff it's probably not that difficult. I wouldn't do it myself, however.
4.10 sounds great with a 351, btw. 3.73 wouldn't be bad either.
the only thing id be kind of concerned about is highway driving. but the lightnings came with 4.10 gears so it cant be that bad. did you have to get your speedo recalibrated or something like that?

Highway driving won't be a problem with either V8. I complain about mine but it's a 300/I6. I run out of steam sometime after 2,000 / 2,500 rpm. Considering you are making power untill what, somewhere past 4,000 rpm? I wouldn't worry about it.
40 mph with OD off: 2,000 RPM. With OD on: 1,500
60 mph with OD on: 2,100 RPM. (These numbers may be off by 100 rpm or so)
That should give you some idea.
Also, yes, you are supposed to reset your PSOM. I never had mine reset. My tranny shifts about every 10 digits. First gear only goes to 10 MPH.
an 8.8 is the worst axle i have ever swapped gears in! i can do a 9in in my sleep and the d44 wasn't too bad but the 8.8 SUCKED i got half way done and got fed up and trailered it to my buddies shop and helped him do it, once i had the d44 ttb thingie out and in the vice it took maybe 2hrs to swap the gears over and get the pattern right
and by the way at 60 i am around 3k with 4.56 gears and 33s without overdrive and i am at like 2200 at 60 in overdrive
i LOVE overdrive and i am thinking i should have gotten 4.88s or so but then i would probably be tearing up my pinion gear all the time
