Hey guys a little info im 19 a student at MSU and im trying to finish a mad conversion before school gets out in 4 weeks. I ran into a dead end with my bronco 2.
What i got so far 1986 bronco 2 body, ford 9 rear dana 44 front both 4:10 posi, 1980ish 302 with a C-6, B&M megashifter, 5 inch lift and 3 inch body all james duff. summit racing turbo mufflers on a true dual 2in set.
I plan on finishing it with a dash out of a 1998 explorer, door panels from a 94 ranger. maybe fiberglass fenders if i can find some cheap, seats form the 98 explorer. it was EB so it has a moonroof but its all messed up so i gotta find parts for that. new carpet headliner and finally a paint job.
Ok since most people say we need more info to help i hope that was enough now the REAL PROBLEM: I put in the 302 finished the mount and everthing but i dont know by heart how to wire the damn thing. the truck has for the most part the stock 2.9 EFI wire harness and comp but i dont know how to make this 302 breathe. i know i have more then enough wires due to the EFI but i dont know what i dont need or what i need to add any help would be awesome! thanks for all of that, and if you have anything that it sounds like i could use let me know. thanks -Josh
Well first thing you can do is toss the 2.9 computer or sell it or whatever, the 302 what did you get it out of, I figure a Explorer right? Then you won't get any snags with the dash. You got the computer and all from the donor? I figure you do. As for wiring I can't be much help on that but I would start by picking up a manual or two Ford Bronco II and the Donor. If it makes you feel any better i'm in the same boat with my K5 Blazer got a newer 350 trying to hook up all that stuff its a hassle. If all else fails get some help from the instructor. Hope this helps a little.
Your 302 is a carbureted model, right? First, you're going to have to modify your fuel system, if you haven't already. Actually, it'd be easier to change over the 302 to EFI if you can find the parts, computer, and wiring harness you need. I've seen plenty of EFI parts on craigslist and eBay. If you'd rather stick with carb, then you'll need to modify the fuel system as I said and then use a DuraSpark II ignition setup - probably along the same lines with the conversion for the '84-'85 BIIs and '83-'85 Rangers. Info on that over on The Ranger Station and possibly in the Tech section on this forum. If you have any specific questions, let me know.
ok well i know i shoulda included this before but more info is it was a free donor motor that i didnt get to pull. im told it is out of a E-150 van. it has a stock 2barrel intake on it which means its 83 or older but i dont know exactly how old. it was also dropped off with NO wiring what so ever. thats the motor the truck i bought used to have a BBC in it and they never removed the 2.9 harness simply spliced into it for the chevy plugs they needed. but all the original 2.9 harness is still there. i was told it was alot easier to stay with the carb. a few things plug right in but some of the extra EFI wires in the harness i know i dont need. im just stuck as far as exactly what i need what i dont, what i have to add or bridge. Im not looking for anythign amazing simply to fifre the motor right now would be huge. thanks again.
For the ignition, you can always go with a Dura Spark distributor paired with a GM 4-pin HEI module and TFI ignition coil (IIRC, this is the aka "Dirt Cheap Ignition"). You will need a heat sink for the ignition module as well as the wiring diagram to find your required ignition wiring from the rest of the harness. You can remove all of the rest of the EEC-IV / fuel injection wiring.
On a semi-related note, depending on your state, you may run into problems getting inspected as the '86-up models were fuel injected and you're putting a carbureted engine in it.
